McIlroy 'over prepared' for US Open - won't do same at Open
Rory says he won't be over preparing heading into the third major of the year at Carnoustie.
Rory McIlroy says he over prepared for the US Open but will not make the same mistake at the Open next week.
The Northern Irishman missed the cut at the second major of the year but expects to do better on Scottish soil, where he has performed well in the past.
"Obviously we play the Dunhill most years, and it's nowhere near what it's going to be like for an Open Championship, so it is nice," he said.
"I felt like I almost over prepared for Shinnecock. I was there too long and I was starting to see all the spots you shouldn't hit it in and that's where I was hitting it in.
“So to know the course and know what to expect, it will be nice."
US Open venue Shinnecock Hills became almost unplayable at the event, dragging the USGA into the crosshairs, but McIlroy has no fear the Open could fall into such a debacle.
"The Open is never going to get like that because the greens won't get that fast and the greens aren't that slopey," he said. "Even if it gets rock hard, it's still very, very fair and playable."
McIlroy came T28 at last week’s Irish Open, and does not play the Scottish Open this week.
