US Open Third Round: LIVE leaderboard and updates from Pinehurst No.2

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the third round of the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau opened up a commanding three-shot lead in the third round of the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2 in North Carolina.

DeChambeau, who finished solo second at the US PGA last month, made six birdies en route to a 3-under 67 on Saturday as he took full advantage of a back-nine collapse from 36-hole leader Ludvig Aberg, who made a costly triple-bogey seven on 13 during a round of 3-over 73.

The big-hitting American is looking to land his second US Open title having already etched his name on the trophy at Winged Foot in 2020.

DeChambeau had stretched into a four-shot lead by the 15th tee but he made a costly double-bogey six on the 16th from nowhere to give the chasing pack some hope.

But he bounced back superbly by draining a 12-footer for birdie on the tough par-3 17th to open up a three-shot lead heading into Sunday.

US OPEN THIRD ROUND LEADERBOARD

Matthieu Pavon-4  (69)
Rory McIlroy-4 (69)
Patrick Cantlay-4 (70)
Hideki Matsuyama-2 (70)
Ludvig Aberg-2 (73)

Tom KimPar (71)

Rory McIlroy (69), Matthieu Pavon (69) and Patrick Cantlay (70) are the closest pursuers to DeChambeau at 4-under par in a tie for second.

McIlroy is going in search of his fifth career major title and a first in nearly 10 years, while Cantlay and Pavon are both looking for their first major victory.

Other players still in contention for the US Open include Aberg, Hideki Matsuyama, Tony Finau and Tyrrell Hatton, Collin Morikawa, Corey Conners and Tom Kim.

Morikawa fired a best-of-the-day 66 to nose into the top 10.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler (71) has had a rare week to forget and is well out of contention at 6-over par.

Shipley 2-under front nine

Shipley +1 (9)

Amateur Shipley rolls home the first birdie of the day at the 9th to move to 2-under par for the round.

Shipley has got the lowest score currently going on the course.

17:45
Morikawa clatters the pin

Morikawa +3 (9)

It's a par on the 9th for Morikawa, who clatters his birdie attempt from off the green against the flagstick.

Perhaps a little fortunate as it was travelling, but it's a tap-in par.

Morikawa goes out in a very respectable 1-under 34.

17:41
Scheffler birdie at 11

Scheffler +5 (11)

The World No.1 is back to level for the round after making a brilliant birdie on the difficult 480-yard par-4 11th.

Scheffler drains the putt from eight feet.

Level for the day is a solid score in all fairness, but it's not what he's after at 10 shots behind.

17:36
X-Man is here

Xander Schauffele has arrived.

The US PGA champ is just four shots back starting the day at 1-under par.

He's off in two hours' time.

Rory is in the building

Rory McIlroy has arrived.

He's off in just under three hours.

The four-time major champion starts the day at 3-under par and just two shots off the pace as he bids to end 10 years of hurt in the majors.

Puig hands it all back

Puig +4 (8)

After a red-hot start from LIV Golf's Puig with three birdies on the first five, the Spaniard has handed them all back with bogeys on 6, 7 and 8.

It's getting tough out there and the wind is picking up, which is going to make this a stern test for the leading groups when they get underway in two hours' time.

Puig was announced in Spain's Olympic golf team earlier this morning, alongside fellow LIV Golf star Jon Rahm.

17:04
Scheffler bogey

Scheffler +6 (9)

Scheffler can't get up and down from sand and he instantly hands back the birdie he made on 8 with a bogey on 9.

Just not happening for him.

17:03
Shipley drives the green

Shipley (a) +3 (3)

Neal Shipley, who was the low amateur at The Masters in April, is the first player to drive the par-4 3rd in the third round.

He two-putted for birdie to move back to level for the day.

17:01
Birdie bomb for Brooks

Koepka +5 (14)

It's not been the moving day Koepka was after but he's just holed a 40-footer for birdie on the 14th.

He's back to level for the round.

16:59
Puig bogey

Puig +2 (6)

Puig makes his first mistake of the day to de-rail his early charge.

After three opening birdies, Puig taps home for a bogey at the tough par-3 6th.

16:57
Scheffler birdie (finally!)

Scheffler +5 (8)

It's been a while but Scheffler drains a birdie from 18 feet on the tough par-4 8th.

He's just found sand at the par-3 9th though.

16:44
Puig keeps foot down

Puig +1 (5)

LIV's Puig is making the big move so far on day three.

Puig found the green at the par-5 5th in two shots and he two-putted to record a third birdie on the first five holes.

16:07
LIV Golf's Puig makes move

Puig +2 (3)

It's a second birdie of the day for LIV Golf's Davig Puig.

He converts a birdie putt from 15 feet on the par-4 3rd.

15:58
Bogey for Scheffler

Scheffler +6 (4)

It's just not happening for Scheffler.

The World No.1 found the wildgrass off the tee and was forced to lay up on the par-4 4th.

He came up some 20 feet short with his third shot and he could not convert the putt.

A bogey goes down on the card and Scheffler is now 11 back and out of it.

15:56
Early birdie for Morikawa

Morikawa +3 (1)

Morikawa sends a beautiful approach into eight feet and then buries the putt for birdie.

A perfect start for the in-form American.

15:47
Double trouble for Koepka

Koepka +5 (9)

Koepka throws away both his two birdies on the front nine with a double-bogey five on the par-3 9th.

A bit of a mess around the green for Brooks.

15:33
Steady start for Scheffler

Scheffler +5 (3)

It's a par, par, par start for Scheffler.

But pars won't get it done for the World No.1 who looks on from 10 shots back right now.

15:25
Fitzpatrick off to a shocker!

Fitzpatrick +11 (5)

England's Matt Fitzpatrick is having an absolute shocker in the third round at the US Open

The 2022 US Open champ started with bogeys at 1 and 2 and he's just made consecutive doubles on 4 and 5.

That's 6-over for his first five holes, taking him to dead last of those that made the cut on 11-over par.

Koepka starts well

Koepka +3 (7)

The five-time major champion curls in a delightful putt from off the green from long range for birdie on the par-4 7th.

It moves Koepka up to 2-under par for the round and to 3-over par for the tournament.

He's got the low round going on the course so far.

15:03
Scheffler's shock admission

Scottie Scheffler made a shock admission after narrowly making the US Open cut on the number.

READ ABOUT THAT HERE

Scheffler has just fired his tee shot down the heart of the par-4 1st.

He's off and away alongside Cam Young.

You have to believe the runaway World No.1 needs a score in the mid 60s to get back in the mix.

He starts the third round a huge 10 shots behind.
