Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's hi-tech golf league have announced a major rule change ahead of next week's matches.

TGL announced on Friday an update to its 'Hammer' rule.

The Hammer allows teams to up the ante and double the points value available on a specific hole from one to two.

In the past, one team began with the Hammer and it could be held by the entire match.

Going forward, though, both teams will be able to use it on the same hole, meaning the most it can be worth is three points.

Each team starts the match with three Hammers and can only use it once per hole.

If a Hammer is thrown before a hole is played, it must be accepted.

TGL claim the change to the rule will provide more opportunity for comebacks by teams trailing.

Apart from Boston Common's match against Woods' Jupiter Links, all matches so far have been one-sided.

The hi-tech league resumes next Monday. Three matches will be played on Presidents Day.
