Mike Weir reveals huge LIV Golf League news ahead of Presidents Cup
International captain Mike Weir confirms LIV Golf League players will remain out of the Presidents Cup.
International captain Mike Weir has confirmed LIV Golf League players will once again be excluded from competing in the Presidents Cup this September, but they could be allowed to play in 2026.
Weir, 53, has been handed the reigns of the International Presidents Cup team for the first time in his career having played in the biennial event as a player five different times from 2000 to 2009.
He has also twice served as a vice-captain.
As a result of the Presidents Cup being hosted by the PGA Tour, it probably will not come as much of a surprise to many golf fans that a decision has been made - at least right now - to rule out all LIV Golf League players from the contest.
The same thing happened at the 2022 Presidents Cup when the USA won by five points (17.5-12.5) at Quail Hollow.
All members that have diverted to LIV Golf remain suspended by the PGA Tour.
Weir confirmed the ineligibility of LIV Golf players in the 2024 Presidents Cup via a media conference call this afternoon:
The latest decision means the likes of a red-hot Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, Mito Pereira, Carlos Ortiz, Sebastian Munoz and Abraham Ancer will have no involvement in Weir's International team at Royal Montreal Golf Club from 26-29 September.
Equally, it will also mean the likes of Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Talor Gooch will be out of Jim Furyk's United States side.
The Presidents Cup is a PGA TOUR entity. Not sure why the exclusion of LIV golfers for this year would be a big surprise.
Weir said the team looks great for now (Min Woo, Hideki, Nick T, etc. rounding into form) and he's going to do well to work with what he's got. https://t.co/kfuLYmqxNt— Adam Stanley (@adam_stanley) March 5, 2024
The United States are looking to win the Presidents Cup for a 10th consecutive year.
Should USA win again, it will mark a 13th time they have lifted the trophy since the Presidents Cup was founded in 1994.
The Internationals won in 1998 and they also tied the match in 2003.
