PGA Tour fans all say the same thing following Rory McIlroy's visit to the recyling bin ahead of the Tour Championship.

It will probably come as no surprise to you that Rory McIlroy is testing new driver shafts ahead of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship.

That's because he rocks up at East Lake this week off the back of some uncharacteristic errant driving at the BMW Championship where he finished T11.

McIlroy ranked 37th in driving accuracy (60%) in the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs last week.

The World No.3 was using a Fujikura Ventus Black 6 X shaft at 45 inches in his TaylorMade Qi10 Driver at Castle Pines GC.

After surviving a brief trip to the lake on the par-5 17th in the second round, McIlroy's driver was by no means 45 inches after he thrashed away at an erratic tee shot down the par-4 9th in the final round.

That's because he snapped it in half as he went down to pick up his tee peg.

The majority of PGA Tour fans consider it was intentional, especially after seeing new video evidence

Some 24 hours later, McIlroy was unsurprisingly testing out new driver shafts for his Qi10 Driver ahead of the final leg of the FedEx Cup race.

According to The Athletic's Gabby Herzig, the Northern Irishman's broken driver shaft was resting in the recycling bin on the practice range at East Lake.

Why his driver shaft made the trip to the 30-man Tour Championship and wasn't just left in the trash can at the BMW Championship is anyone's guess.

'First order of business for Rory at East Lake: testing new driver shafts,' tweeted Herzig, who received replies from PGA Tour fans all saying the same thing.

'Gotta see how they hold up under pressure,' commented one PGA Tour fan.

'And buoyancy,' joked another.

One wrote: 'Whichever shaft can absorb his rage is the one to put into play!'

'So he can figure out which ones he can break easily when he’s a wittle fwustwated [sic],' tweeted another golf fan.

McIlroy's T11 at the BMW Championship saw him drop one spot to sixth ahead of this week's Tour Championship.

The record three-time FedEx Cup holder starts the week six shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler in the staggered scoring start at East Lake.

McIlroy has won from starting six shots back before, so he will still fancy his chances.

He will just need his new driver shaft - whichever he chooses to elect - to cooperate if he is to win the PGA Tour's record first prize of $25m this Sunday.

McIlroy gets his first round underway on Thursday alongside his European Ryder Cup teammate Ludvig Aberg at 1.38pm local time.

That is 6.38pm for UK fans.
