Former PGA Tour pro rips into Tiger Woods' ex-coach: "Couldn't even hit the range"

Former PGA Tour member turned Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee has criticised Tiger Woods' former swing coach Hank Haney.

Brandel Chamblee says Tiger Woods' decision to change his golf swing at the height of his success was 'the craziest thing in the history of sports'.

Woods was in his prime years when Chamblee first started his broadcasting career after he left the Tour as a full-time player in 2003.

Chamblee opened up on the subject of Woods on the most recent edition of the Dan on Golf podcast.

The Golf Channel analyst said one of the first questions he was asked was why Woods decided to change his swing.

Even back then, his assessment drew a mixed response.

"Now think about what had happened in 2004," Chamblee said

"Tiger Woods had just won four majors in a row, the Players and the Canadian Open all in a span of a year.

"He was in the middle of making 142 cuts in a row and he was winning by 12 and 15 and eight shots in these major championships.

"And he changed that golf swing. And so I am now sitting down for the first time at a desk as an analyst.

"And the first question I get [asked] is, 'Why would he change that golf swing?'

"It's the craziest thing in the history of sports what Tiger Woods did.

"Absolutely, without question, there is nothing that comes close in the history of sport."

Chamblee said what Woods did was akin to NBA star Steph Curry now deciding to switch up how he shoots three pointers.

During this period, Woods' coach was Hank Haney.

Chamblee wasn't too complimentary of Haney.

"Hank Haney was telling Tiger Woods how to play golf and Hank Haney had the driver yips," Chamblee said. "He couldn't hit a range.

"And this guy is telling Tiger Woods how to change his golf swing from the greatest golf swing in the history of the game."

Chamblee said he still maintains to this day that Woods' swing change was the 'craziest thing' in the history of sports.

Woods is expected to miss all of the major championships in 2025 after rupturing his Achilles.

The 15-time major champion - who recently confirmed his latest girlfriend is Vanessa Trump - was ramping up his practice sessions ahead of the annual Masters Tournament when he felt a twinge in his left heel.

Surgery was a success but it may be the case that this mountain will be too big for Woods to scale.

Rory McIlroy claimed that Woods will at the very least try to mount another improbable comeback.

Chamblee won't count out Woods winning again just yet.

He argued that in order for Woods to win again all of the stars would need to align.

Woods would need to get on the right side of the draw, have perfect weather and be playing on a flat course for him to win again.

"But maybe [it's possible]," Chamblee said. "It's still the most compelling thing in golf."
