The Open Championship Third Round: LIVE leaderboard and updates from Royal Troon

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the third round of The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

American Billy Horschel will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2024 Open Championship

Horschel, playing alongside England's Justin Rose, carded a third round of 69 to sit atop the leaderboard on 4-under par.

Rose battled hard to card a 73 and sits one behind Horschel with five other golfers.

Xander Schauffele, who claimed his first major title earlier in the year, is one of those players.

Thriston Lawrence, Russell Henley, Sam Burns and qualifier Daniel Brown are also on 3-under.

World number one Scottie Scheffler carded a level par 71 and trails by three.

Shane Lowry held the 36-hole lead but endured a tough day on the Ayrshire links on Friday.

The 2019 Open champion carded a 77 to drop back to ninth on the leaderboard.

High-profile players to miss the 36-hole cut included Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith and Viktor Hovland.

One of the wildest par saves you'll see this week

Robert MacIntyre has finished up his third round, carding a 1-over 72 to take him to 6-over for the championship.

We mentioned how he was in a spot of bother and now we can show you how he managed to save par.

In the end, MacIntyre went for a full righty swing and then proceeded to salvage the unlikeliest of pars to the delight of the 18th grandstand.

Sir Nick Faldo offers verdict on Shane Lowry

Sir Nick Faldo tells Sky Sports that Shane Lowry has benefitted from turning up to prepare for The Open a few weeks early.

It makes a huge difference, the six-time major champion says.

"Get yourself in the red for Sunday and give yourself a chance," he says.

Who is next on the tee?

German Marcel Siem and Jon Rahm are due up next on the first tee.

Home stretch for Adam Scott

A. Scott E (18*)

The former Masters champion has made a big move today with six birdies and one bogey.

Scott manages to get through the long par-3 17th unscathed.

Fairway found at the 18th. Can he make one more birdie?

And just as I type these words, Shane Lowry has just arrived with his daughter.

He looks cool, calm and collected.

Let's check in with a former champion

J. Spieth +3 (4)

As ever, it's been a wild ride for Jordan Spieth fans.

The American will be acutely aware of players taking advantage of the conditions right now.

He started his third round with two pars before making bogey at the third hole.

Spieth bounced back with a birdie but he's just sent his tee shot miles long into the semi rough at the par-3 fifth.

From 20 yards, he's given himself just inside seven feet to save par.

Spieth is playing with his Ryder Cup teammate Sam Burns.

Beauty from Thomas

J. Thomas -1 (10)

Right, 5-under for JT at the turn.

Let's see if he can keep it going.

The two-time major champion ticks off a par at the 10th and has just obliterated a drive down the par-4 11th.

That thing travelled 322 yards...

14:00
How low will players go today?

We are sat in the media centre here and the giant leaderboard in front of us is a sea of red.

Sungjae Im has carded the best round of the day so far with a 65.

13:56
59, anyone?

T. Lawrence -4 (6)

South Africa's Thriston Lawrence is demonstrating how gettable Troon is this morning, courtesy of five birdies in his opening six holes.

He's playing alongside England's Laurie Canter.

13:54
Robert MacIntyre in trouble

MacIntyre +6 (18*)

Robert MacIntyre somehow managed to make the cut yesterday when he looked completely gone after a calamatous front nine.

But he's here and he's just reached his final hole of the third round.

He's in trouble as his golf ball has come to rest in awkward position next to a fairway bunker.

Bob doesn't know whether to play it lefty or righty...

13:50
Fresh Scottie mugshot!

Fear not, Scottie hasn't been arrested on his way into Royal Troon this morning.

But his latest mugshot has just been splashed across social media.

Mugshots have been released ahead of the Paris Olympics in two weeks' time.

Check out the mugshots of some of the world's best players including Scheffler here.

Lawrence bins another

Lawrence -1 (5)

What a start from the South African.

He's just popped in a fourth birdie in five holes at the tricky par-3 5th.

Lawrence is now into the red at 1-under par for the tournament and bang in the mix for a first major title.

Weather update

Here's a look at the forecast for the rest of the day at Royal Troon.

It looks like the heavens will open a fair bit, so we'll be firing up the brollies fairly soon.

The leading groups might be in for a bit more of a battle than the morning groups at least.

The wind looks like it won't be too bad, which is a big positive for the leading groups.

Lawrence off to a flyer too

Lawrence Par (4)

Thriston Lawrence is not messing about either on day three.

The South African has just drained three birdies in four holes to move to Level Par.

Seven back, but what a start.

JT is absolutely flying!

Thomas -1 (8)

What a difference a day makes for Justin Thomas.

JT has just poured in a fifth birdie of the round at the Postage Stamp 8th to move it to 5-under par for the round and back into the red for the tournament at 1-under par.

Thomas shot a dismal 78 yesterday but he's recovering it all back today to get back in the mix.

He's still six back though.

13:20
Im finishes in style, Thomas recovering well

Im +1 (F), Thomas Par (7)

Sungjae Im completes a fantastic round of 5-under 66 in the third round.

Im binned a 35-footer for birdie on 18.

It leaves the South Korean at 1-over par for the tournament.

He's unlikely going to have any say in The Open this week but it's a brilliant score nevertheless.

Elsewhere, Justin Thomas is bouncing back on moving day.

After a dismal second-round 78 that sent the two-time US PGA champion back into the pack, Thomas has rattled in four birdies on the first seven holes to get back to level par.

That's seven off the pace.

LIV Golf's Catlin on the charge

Catlin Par (7)

LIV Golf's John Catlin is making a brillant move on Saturday with four birdies on his first seven holes.

He's now up to level par for the tournament, which is just outside the top 10.

Catlin is acting as a replacement for Charles Howell III on Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers GC on LIV Golf this season.

That's because Howell III has got injured.

Catlin is certainly building a case to become a full-time member of DeChambeau's team as a result of his play this week.

DeChambeau has already been sent packing after missing the cut on Friday.

12:09
Scott surging

Scott +1 (8)

Scott is another player proving what can be done on moving day.

The former Masters champion is 4-under thru eight holes and 1-over par for the tournament.

11:30
Birdies keeping rolling for Im

Im +1 (9)

This is some start from Im.

He’s just recorded the best front nine of the week.

The South Korean has just rolled in a fifth birdie of the day on the 9th to move to 5-under for the round.

Im is now 1-over for The Open, but that is eight shots back of Lowry who tees off at 3.45pm.

10:59
Sungjae on the charge

Im +2 (8)

Sungjae Im is now 4-under par thru eight holes.

He’s up to 2-over par for The Open.

Still nine shots back though.

Welcome to third round updates LIVE from the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon

Welcome to third round updates LIVE from the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The leading groups don't get underway for another four hours or so but there appear plenty of early birdies if some of the morning groups are anything to go by on Saturday.

A number of players are 3-under thru the first six holes this morning, including PGA Tour star Sungjae Im who has pushed it to 3-over par for the tournament.

Adam Scott has also just got off to a nice start with birdies at his first two holes of the day to also move to 3-over par.

Elsewhere, home favourite Bob MacIntyre has just picked up a birdie to move to 1-under par thru three holes and 4-over par for the tournament.

Right, time for a coffee...
