Andrew Johnston was reduced to tears during his post-tournament interview after recording his best result in four years on the DP World Tour at the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre GC in Switzerland.

Johnston, 35, carded rounds of 65, 67, 72 and 66 to finish solo third on 10-under par and one shot out of a playoff between Alfredo Garcia-Heredia and eventual winner Matt Wallace

The Englishman, who goes by the nickname 'Beef', won his first and only DP World Tour title to date at the 2016 Open de Espana at Valderrama.

His previous best result prior to last week was a T3 at the Celtic Classic during the covid lockdown in August 2020.

Johnston has openly admitted to struggling with his mental health over recent years and earlier this season HarperCollins published Johnston's biography titled 'Golf Is Hard'

Fresh off two top-25 finishes on the DP World Tour in his last three tournaments, Johnston continued his resurgence to record his best finish in more than four years at the Omega European Masters on Sunday.

Although disappointed not to land a second career title on the former European Tour circuit, Johnston's impressive solo third in Crans Montana vaulted him 69 spots up the DP World Tour Rankings to 85th on the list.

Watch: Referee tells Matt Wallace to keep his nose out of things as he gives Andrew Johnston a ruling!

Johnston, who is playing on a medical extension this season, needs to finish inside the top 115 in the DP World Tour Rankings to earn his card for 2025.

With a number of big tournaments left on the schedule, Johnston will now be looking to keep his foot on the gas and lock up his card for next season.

An emotional Johnston told Sky Sports Golf's Josh Antmann:

"Yeah a lot of relief, it's been a tough couple of years.

"To put in a good performance for four days, yeah it's been good.

"I don't ever like to go in with that expectation, you have to believe you can have a good week, but its four rounds of golf and anything can happen. It's just a case of trying to put yourself into a good position going into Sunday. The way we battled on Saturday in the wind and hung around to give ourselves a chance today is all you can do. We tried to be aggressive today to try and catch Matt. Alfredo has, I haven't, but I'm delighted with the week."

On the help of his family and team, Beef said:

"It's great, we're a massive team. It's not just me, it's everyone else, it's so nice to have everyone."

Why is Andrew Johnston known as 'Beef'?

Andrew Johnston's nickname has been 'Beef' ever since his junior golf days when one of his friends noted his afro looked like a large chunk of meat.

Matt Wallace, 34, went on to win the European Masters to record his fifth title on the DP World Tour and first in six years.

Wallace was equally as emotional as Johnston when he was interviewed by Sky's Antmann on the 18th green.

The victory surges Wallace to the top of the early European Ryder Cup team standings.

The top six will earn automatic spots in Luke Donald's 2025 team at Bethpage Black in New York.

Donald will then get six captain's picks.
