Lowry was born on 2 April 1987 to former Gaelic football player Brendan Lowry and Bridget Lowry.
He grew up in Clara, County Offaly. He has one brother, named Alan, and a sister called Sinead.
Lowry taught himself how to play golf and has spoken of the countless hours he spent at Esker Hills Golf Club fine-tuning his craft.
Lowry had a distinguished amateur career, the highlight of which came when he won the 2009 Irish Open at County Louth Golf Club on the European Tour, defeating England's Robert Rock in a playoff.
