Rocco Mediate has had his say on the LIV Golf versus PGA Tour debate, saying he doesn't blame players for leaving but "just don't be a d***" as he urged potential defectors to at least say "thank you".

Mediate, 59, recently joined the Beyond the Clubhouse podcast where he spoke to Garrett Johnston about what is frustrating him in the golf world.

It's clear that Mediate - who memorably pushed Tiger Woods all the way to an 18-hole Monday playoff at the 2008 U.S. Open - doesn't have a single issue with the money or even the source of it.

According to Mediate, players have been going to Saudi Arabia "for years" to collect appearance fees.

Just this week Bubba Watson, who resigned his PGA Tour membership after joining LIV, made this extraordinary claim about life on the established, American circuit.

Mediate told the podcast:

"What's going on now, it kinda p***** you off  with the way guys have talked about what gave them everything that they have.
"Think about Greg Norman. Think about it. Everything he has came because he played on the PGA Tour. What,  that wasn't good enough?
"What would you have been without it? It's a good question.
"There was no other platform, and there still isn't. [LIV is] 54 holes in shorts. Woop de doo.
"Yeah it would be great to make... of course it would be great to make the money. I don't blame them at all.
"They've [professional golfers] been going to Saudi Arabia for a million years for appearance fees, appearance money. Okay. That's not even an issue.
"But do it the right way. How about a thank you?"

Mediate, speaking ahead of the Timbertech Championship on the PGA Tour Champions at Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club, continued:

"You know what, if they called me and said, 'We want an old guy on the PGA Tour, on the LIV Tour, I would say, 'Yeah, that'd be cool. I want to thank the PGA Tour for giving me everything that I have. But I'm done now. I'm gonna go away quietly and I'm go hang out for a couple of years and I'm out.
"That's how you do it. You don't be a d***. You just don't. Because first of all you're already getting paid way more than you ever earned. And one thing we do out here is we earn it, they don't hand it to you.
"Here [the PGA Tour Champions] it's a little different but this is our reward for the regular Tour."

Mediate has been attracting attention this year due to his attire on the golf course but these comments might grab a few headlines.

Elsewhere, LIV Golf's commissioner Greg Norman has suggested this week that he still remains hopeful about sitting down and thrashing out a compromise with the PGA Tour.

Norman, 67, told the media this week that LIV Golf did not "create all this angst" but nothing will change unless they sit down to talk.

His comments followed speculation that two PGA Tour stars were ready to sign for the LIV Golf League.
