Callaway launched two new wedges this year, the Opus Platinum and the standard Opus, which we will discuss today.

With one major win already to their name courtesy of Xander Schauffele's victory at The Open, the Callaway Opus wedges have already been a big hit on Tour.

Replacing the very popular JAWS range, Opus has received a fresh makeover and if the performance is anything like the looks, then we've got a real contender for the best wedges of 2024.

To find out how these wedges perform, we took them down to Custom Golf Works to look at the data, before heading out to Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate to do some on course testing.

Let's get into it.

Player Level:

As Callaway's core model of wedges, Opus are designed to be used by all golfers whether it's someone who plays once a month or someone who's grinding it out on the PGA Tour. Thanks to the four different grind options available, there is a setup to suit every golfer.

Callaway Opus Wedges Looks and Feel

I absolutely love the updated look of these wedges. JAWS were by no means ugly, but Callaway has opted to go for a slightly less busy sole design, and in our eyes it's really paid off.

In hand the brushed chrome finish looks superb, and the discreet Opus branding behind the striking area with a single black line through the centre of the body looks stunning.

If I was going to be really picky I would have made the Callaway branding perhaps a touch smaller, but other than that it's a big home run from the design team.

Down at address these wedges once again look very traditional. The tear drop shaping features a rounded toe and a relatively compact blade length.

I'm a bit of a stickler for how the hosel looks too, and the way Callaway has blended it into the face, for me, looks absolutely spot on.

In terms of feel, we would say the Opus wedges are noticeably firmer than the Opus Platinum, but they are certainly still on par with the likes of the Titleist Vokey SM10s and PING S159s.

That sensation of high friction you typically experience with new wedges is certainly amplified with Opus as a result of all three parts of Spin Gen which has been rolled out across the range.

The three components are, additional grooves on the face, offset grooves in grooves, and a new aggressive face blast. The three combined not only deliver a grippy sensation at impact, but as we will get onto shortly, they also produce incredible stopping power.

Callaway Opus Wedges Performance and Forgiveness

When I first got my hands on the Callaway Opus wedges, I was fortunate to test them on the fine links turf in St. Andrews, with a fairly hefty breeze flowing through. Typically I wouldn't initially test wedges with a 30 mph right to left wind blowing, however I thought it was worth having a hit anyway.

What I discovered during my testing, was that these wedges are very workable. Whether you want to send it high and let it sail in the wind, or take loft off to try and punch one in to a pin, these wedges are up to the task.

The consistency I was able to achieve with them was also very pleasing, having hit close to ten full shots on the range, you could have walked out and put a small hand towel over where they all finished.

With regards to spin, I was able to generate roughly 11,500rpm on full 100 yard shots, which puts these wedges above even the Titleist SM10s, which averaged 500rpm less.

The accuracy on not only left to right but also front to back I was able to achieve with these wedges was very impressive. Tight grouping is of paramount importance from within 100 yards, we we were pin point with Opus in hand.

In terms of turf interaction, it's very much about finding which grind is for you. Opus wedges are available in four different grind options, and I opted for 10 degrees of bounce in the S grind, which just offered that extra bit of forgiveness which I love on both full shots and shorter chips.

Around the greens, these wedges were once again standout performers. Whether it was a low bump and run or a straightforward pitch shot, they were reliable, very versatile, and notably forgiving.

Should you buy a set of Callaway Opus wedges?

I love these wedges and I'm delighted to now have them in the bag. The spin is strong and consistent, the looks are undeniably hot, and the all around performance is five stars.

If you most recently bought a se of wedges last year then you can probably hold on to them for now, however if you're grooves are starting to feel a bit dull and you want to upgrade for 2025 then Opus wedges are certainly worth testing when you next visit a pro shop.
