Exclusive: European Ryder Cup hopeful on the piece of equipment that won't leave his golf bag

European Ryder Cup hopeful Thomas Detry has explained why he hasn't changed his Odyssey O-Works Black #7 putter for more than seven years.

European Ryder Cup hopeful Thomas Detry has explained to GolfMagic why he has unwavering loyalty to one piece of equipment in his bag.

Detry stormed to his first ever PGA Tour victory last month at the WM Phoenix Open.

The Belgian's seven-shot win at TPC Scottsdale vaulted him up the European Ryder Cup rankings and it's not unreasonable to suggest he could be heading to Bethpage Black this September.

Part of Detry's victory was undoubtedly down to his performances on the greens. That week alone, he made 28 birdies and only dropped four shots.

The 32-year-old has been one of the most consistent putters in the game over the past couple of years. In 2024, he was inside the top-10 in this department.

While the trend hasn't continued this year to the same degree, he is still among the top 30 putters on Tour.

Veteran Brandt Snedeker currently leads the Tour in the putting department, followed by Lee Hodges and Frankie Capan III.

Detry attributes his success on the dancefloor to his Odyssey O-Works Black #7 putter

"It's been in the bag for a long time, probably seven years," Detry told GolfMagic

"It's got the insert that Odyssey released a couple of years ago and there's a bunch of guys using it."

Those players include the likes of Min Woo Lee and Sam Burns.

Detry added: "I like it a lot because it has a very soft feel to it and I've been used to it for a long time and it’s kind of grown on me.

"It's just been a great putter for me. It sits well to my eye and I've been putting really well for a long time with it."

Some Tour pros are known to be non-stop tinkerers.

For example, Hideki Matsuyama took four putters with him to The Sentry in January and travelled with six to The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.

There are times where Detry feels as though he doesn't putt well but is still reluctant to try something else.

"I have to talk with myself and remind myself of all the times I've putted so well with it in the past, that I can't change," he said.

"I really like the look and feel of it. I trust it."

He added: "Some guys change putters every week. My friend Thomas Pieters, it feels like he changes his putter once a week."

Pieters currently plies his trade across the DP World Tour and LIV Golf

Detry continued: "But he does change putters seemingly all the time.

"I think I am a bit more conservative, and I just keep the same putter because it gives me confidence in the feel on different types of greens.

"Like everything in golf, it's about good feels. I won my first tournament with it and there’s no reason for me to change."

Detry was talking to GolfMagic in a collaboration with Beyond the Clubhouse.
