Sam Burns broke his driver in disgust after hitting a snap hook on the par-4 9th in the third round of the FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.

Burns, 28, was left without a driver for the remainder of the third round as a result of his angry outburst.

The American was playing in the final group with leader Hideki Matsuyama.

Burns was just two shots off the pace when he boarded the 9th tee.

But he snap-hooked his drive well to the left and it would lead to a costly double-bogey six.

To Burns' credit he bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 10th.

But he would then find the water at both the 12th and 14th to fall back into the chasing pack.

As it stands, Matsuyama is comfortably out in front heading into the final round.

Matsuyama and members of his team were shockingly robbed in London last week.

Only Matsuyama's wallet was taken.

But his caddie and coach had their passports taken.

Matsuyama's caddie and coach had to fly back home to Japan to sort out their passports and visas.

The 2021 Masters champion is going in search of his second title of the season and the 10th of his PGA Tour career.

Burns' last win came at the 2023 WGC Match Play, which is no longer on the PGA Tour rota.

Despite not winning this season, Burns has amassed six top-10 finishes in 2024, one of which came at the US Open (T9).

Burns is ranked 33rd in the world but he is currently projected to be safely through to the Tour Championship at the end of the month.
