PGA Tour golfer's claim about players' wives divides opinion: "Congrats on your worst tweet ever"
PGA Tour member Michael Kim has divided opinion with a post on X about the influence of players' wives on the North American circuit.
Ever wondered how a PGA Tour professional decides their schedule?
According to current member Michael Kim, players don't just think about current form, ranking, past performances, the vibe of the city or travel cost.
The players' wives, Kim contends, have a bigger influence than we are led to believe.
"Players choose which tournaments to play based on a variety of factors," Kim wrote on X on Monday.
"Course, past performance, the city, vibe, etc, all pretty regular stuff.
"But something not as obvious is that wives can have a big influence.
"Some wives tell the player that he needs to add a certain tournament to the schedule whether he likes the place or not lol."
He added: "Savvy tournament directors make sure the wives are really well taken care of with activities and events to make the tournament as attractive to everyone in the family not just the players.
In the thread, Kim pointed out that the forthcoming World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles and the Procore Championship (formerly Fortinet) in Napa all do a great job of providing activities for Tour players' families.
His post, however, did attract a bit of heat.
Here's some reaction:
"This is interesting insight. But I have a really hard time relating to the privilege of picking and choosing what events to play in. Most people work 50 out 52 weeks a year."
"Happy Tour wife, happy Tour life."
Who is Michael Kim?
Kim, 31, turned professional in 2013. He was a recipient of the renowned Haskins Award.
His only PGA Tour victory to date came at the 2018 John Deere Classic.
He regularly posts on X about his life on Tour and over the years has made some outrageous accusations.
Most recently, he claimed Hideki Matsuyama was denied the full $2.7m first prize at the 2020 Players Championship because four players failed to finish their first round.
