Late Max Greyserman meltdown hands Aaron Rai first PGA Tour title at Wyndham Championship

England's Aaron Rai captures his maiden PGA Tour title with victory at the Wyndham Championship, but he was hugely helped by a late implosion from Max Greyserman.

Aaron Rai took full advantage of a late meltdown from Max Greyserman to land his first PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship.

Rai, 29, birdied the tough par-4 18th to card a flawless final round of 64 and post 18-under.

But runner-up Greyserman, 29, was left to rue what might have been as he led by four shots on 21-under par after making a stunning eagle-two on the par-4 13th.

It marked his third eagle of the day as golfers played a full 36 holes on Sunday due to playing catch up from bad weather on Thursday.

Then disaster struck for the American.

Greyserman proceeded to hit his tee shot out of bounds on the par-4 14th and he would lose his entire four-shot lead in one hole by going on to make a quadruple-bogey eight

He was unfortunate to hit the cart path with his tee shot but he compounded one error after another when hacking his fourth shot out of the rough into the fairway bunker.

After a two on 13, it was an eight at 14.

Greyserman then looked to be back on the recovery path when making a two-putt birdie on the par-5 15th.

That saw him at the time move one shot back in front of Rai, who could only par the hole in the group ahead.

But the rollercoaster ride soon continued for Greyserman as he went on to four-putt the par-3 16th for a double-bogey five.

Three of those putts came from three feet.

From one ahead to one behind in an instant.

Rai then went and buried his sixth birdie of the round when converting a six-footer on 18 to move two shots clear on 18-under par.

A stunned Greyserman went on to par the final two holes to come home in 38 and close with a 69 to finish runner-up and two shots behind.

It marked a second straight solo second for Greyserman in his PGA Tour rookie season.

After his bitter disappointment at not seeing out his first title, Greyserman, who moves to 47th in the FedEx Cup standings, tried to take the positives during his interview with CBS' Amanda Balionis

"Another good week, runner-up again, I hung in there but look, it's golf, I'll go pet my dog, hang out with my wife and head over to Memphis," he said.

Despite the dramatic late collapse from Greyserman, a first PGA Tour title is more than deserved for Rai, who has been knocking on the door for some time now.

Rai, who had already won twice on the DP World Tour, said:

"Truly a dream come true, to get here was a dream but to understand how tough it is to win out here and now do it is just an amazing achievement."

Of learning of Greyserman's meltdown in the group behind him, Rai added:

"I wasn't completely aware of what was happening at the time, but I just stuck to the process and it's amazing to finish it off with a birdie at 18."

Rai, who wins $1.4m for his victory, now moves up to 25th in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the Playoffs next week.

JJ Spaun and Ryo Hisatsune finished T3 on 15-under par, one shot ahead of amateur Luke Clanton, who continued his rapid rise.

Matt Kuchar made a bizarre decision to not play his second shot on the par-4 18th in the final group due to darkness - even though his playing partners Greyserman and Chad Ramey elected to play out the final hole.

The decision left the commentary team - and golf fans on social media - completely stunned and baffled especially with Kuchar well out of the tournament down in T12.

Kuchar will be the only player in the tournament to come back and complete his round on Monday morning.
