Golf legend Fred Couples provides update on Tiger Woods after ruptured achillies injury

Fred Couples has revealed Tiger Woods is in "great spirits" following his ruptured achillies injury. 

Woods, 49, will now be forced out of PGA Tour action for the rest of the season as he looks to recover from his latest big injury setback.

The 15-time major champion took to social media on the eve of The Players Championship last week to reveal he had gone under the knife to treat a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Woods was expecting to play in a handful of PGA Tour events outside of the four majors this season.

But that unfortunately will not be happening now, with Rory McIlroy confirming Woods will now be out of action until 2026. 

Couples, 65, provided a latest update on Woods during this week's Hoag Classic on the PGA Tour Champions.

Woods and Couples are good friends and they have been exchanging text messages this week. 

Couples admits Woods is in "great spirits" despite his ruptured achilles injury, which comes a year after the former World No.1 underwent the sixth back surgery of his career. 

Prior to that, Woods was recovering from leg and ankle injuries sustained during his horror car crash in Los Angeles in February 2021. 

"I've texted Tiger as soon as it happened," Couples said of Woods when learning about his ruptured achilles. 

"He got back to me and I texted him on a couple of other things, about TGL, about his daughter who won the state soccer thing, I mean that was before he hurt himself, he was on Cloud 20, it was amazing. 

"He's in great spirits for a ruptured achilles, he really is, he'll be fine. It's such a bummer because people think when he's going to play? He was scheduled to play a few events, not a ton, but a few events, and you know his mother passing away would slow anyone down, but he's my man and texting him is a lot of fun."
