NEW: THE OPEN FINAL ROUND TEE TIMES

Scottie Scheffler takes a one-shot lead over Matt Fitzpatrick heading into the weekend at the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush.

Scheffler, 29, fired a brilliant second round of 7-under 64 to vault to the top of the leaderboard, a place many people expected him to be at the start of the week.

The World No.1 is looking to win The Open for the first time in his career and also win a second major title in 2025.

Should Scheffler etch his name on the famous Claret Jug this Sunday then he will move to within one leg of completing the career grand slam.

Scheffler, who has two Masters wins and a PGA title to his name, finds himself at 10-under par and one shot clear of England's Fitzpatrick heading into Saturday's third round.

Brian Harman, who won The Open in 2023, is in a tie for third on 8-under par alongside China's Haotong Li.

Other players in contention include Tyrrell Hatton, Bob MacIntyre, Rasmus Hojgaard, Harris English and Chris Gotterup on 5-under.

Rory McIlroy has plenty of work to do to get back in the hunt for a second Open title at 3-under par.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele is also well off the pace at 2-under par, but his eligibility for the weekend marks his 69th straight cut and the sixth longest cut streak in PGA Tour history.

Shane Lowry, who won The Open last time out at Portrush, was assessed a two-shot penalty after the round for a moving a ball and he fell from 2-under to level par.

Jon Rahm also finds himself at level par, one shot ahead of Bryson DeChambeau, who struck an impressive 65 to make the cut on the number at 1-over par.

But a host of big-name players missed the cut at The Open
