His Majesty King Charles III becomes patron of The R&A
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews confirms His Majesty King Charles III has accepted the Patronage of the Club.
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is honoured and humbled to have been advised that His Majesty King Charles III has graciously accepted the Patronage of the Club.
Following her accession in 1952, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II accepted the Patronage of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, which has been accepted by reigning Monarchs since HM King William IV in 1834.
Martin Slumbers, Secretary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, said:
"Her late Majesty’s 70-year patronage of the Club was an immense source of pride for its Members.
"We are delighted and deeply honoured to have been advised by Buckingham Palace that His Majesty, The King has accepted patronage of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
"We now look forward to His Majesty’s support for the work of the Club and our commitment to the sport of golf across the world."
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews was established in 1754 and has evolved through two and a half centuries as a leading authority in the world game.
It has a worldwide membership of more than 2,400.
His Majesty, The King began a return to public engagements last week.
The King has had to avoid crowds and public meetings for the past few months after it was revealed he had an unspecified form of cancer in February.
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews also announced today that Ian Pattinson will serve as Captain in 2024/25, having been nominated by the Past Captains of the Club.
Pattinson will begin year in office after the traditional Driving-in ceremony on the first tee of the Old Course on Friday 20 September 2024.
