Brendan Steele has claimed he was only going to join LIV Golf if he was allowed to be on Phil Mickelson's team.

Steele joined the breakaway from the PGA Tour last February having never watched one of their events.

He has already won once on the Saudi-backed league and, crucially, has done enough to avoid relegation.

That means his place on the HyFlyers roster for 2025 is secure.

Steele opened up on how he joined LIV Golf in the latest episode of the Fairway to Heaven podcast.

Former PGA Tour pro Cameron Tringale was the first to approach the subject, according to Steele.

"Cameron had asked me, 'Would you ever come?' And I'm like, 'If I was going to, it would be with you guys, so if there was ever an opportunity, I'd love to know about it,'" he said.

"And Phil called and he just said, 'Look, I wanted to run something by you before I went any different direction, I wasn't sure if you would be interested or whatever'.

"We just talked it out and I thought this is too good an opportunity to pass up as far as picking Phil's brain, travelling the world, having a team you know, like everything that lined up was like this is a perfect opportunity, I can't pass on it."

He added: "And then there's still nerves and things you know, because I don't know what it's like out there.

"I haven't played a LIV event, I haven't seen one so I get to Mayakoba last year and I'm pretty nervous, and I'm pretty worried about what it's all going to be like and everything, and I got comfortable really fast."

The HyFlyers comprises of Mickelson, Steele, Tringale and Andy Ogletree.

Former U.S. Amateur champion Ogletree also avoided the drop.

Mickelson would not reveal if he has any plans to try and add a new face to his team.

He promised more signings were on the way before LIV's third season concluded in Dallas last month.
