Golf star Cameron Smith has confirmed his wife Shanel Naoum is expecting their first child.

Smith revealed the happy news when he hopped on Straight Talk with Marik Bourig.

The 2022 Open Champion said Shanel, who is a chiropractor, recently had a 20-week check-up.

They know the baby's gender but will keep it a secret so it's a surprise for their friends and family, he said.

Shanel's due date is next April, which could potentially provide a bit of a headache for the golfer as that is when the annual Masters Tournament is held.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler faced the same conundrum earlier in the year as his wife Meredith Scudder was heavily pregnant with their first child at the time.

Scheffler revealed he was ready to leave Augusta National at a moment's notice.

Fortunately for Scheffler, their son Bennett was born on 8 May, a few weeks after the American captured his second green jacket.

"She's doing awesome," Smith told the pod of Shanel.

Smith married Shanel 10 months ago in a lavish ceremony in Brisbane.

They exchanged vows at the Cathedral of St Stephen in front of around 150 members of friends and family.

The reception was held at the upmarket Rivershed at Howard Smith Wharves.

Smith met Shanel in Jacksonville, Florida, through a mutual friend.

"It motivates me more to do well [being married]," Smith told the pod.

"There's added pressure, you know, with having someone there with you that is so close.

"They really feel like [part of the] team and they want you to do well and you know that they want you to do well.

"It's almost like another piece to the puzzle. It's very motivating."

He added: "I'm really looking forward to having a family and how cool that is going to be as a parent and I think that will motivate me even more to be a better person and a player."

Smith backs LIV to become 'the' tour

Smith also spoke about what life has been like since he joined the breakaway LIV Golf League

It is widely assumed Smith signed a three-year deal with LIV in 2022 that was worth more than $100m.

Smith switched to LIV only months after he claimed his maiden major title at the landmark 150th Open at St Andrews.

That year, he also won the coveted Players Championship on the PGA Tour

Smith doesn't appear to have any regrets about his decision at all.

In fact, he is backing LIV to become 'the' tour in the future.

"As time goes on we are going to have better players, more depth and I think we are going to be the tour," he said.
