Hatton's score was matched later in the day by Justin Harding and Adri Arnaus.
Justin Rose moved into contention for a first BMW PGA title with a 4-under 68 - and he provided one of the more comical moments of the day when thinking he had made a hole-in-one, only to realise that was not quite the case...
Fresh of his European Tour victory in a playoff over Tommy Fleetwood at the Scottish Open last week, Aaron Rai maintained his stellar form to match Rose's score with a flawless 4-under 68.

Matt Wallace also got off to a solid start with a 3-under 69, a score that was matched by Ian Poulter, who finished birdie, birdie, eagle despite suffering with back pain for much of the day.
Patrick Reed double-bogeyed his final hole at the par-4 8th to fall back to 2-under alongside Lee Westwood, both of whom are playing alongside Hatton for the opening two rounds.
