Open viewing figures best since 2006, claims NBC Sports, Golf Channel
With Tiger Woods contending for The Open at Carnoustie, the United States was sent into a frenzy.
NBC Sports and Golf Channel have revealed the final round of The Open at Carnoustie on Sunday drew a 5.0 overnight rating, which matched the previous best back in 2006 when Tiger Woods won his last Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool.
The last time an Open received better ratings was in 2000 when Woods won at St Andrews to complete his career Grand Slam.
TV ratings from Sunday's final day action at Carnoustie hit a 6.74 high rating when Woods briefly held the outright lead after nine holes, before losing it with a double bogey at the 11th.
Other big names Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose were also in contention, only to be denied by eventual winner Francesco Molinari who picked up his maiden major in terrific style with a birdie at the final hole.
Figures were up 38% in comparison to the final round of the 2017 Open, which saw Spieth outduel Matt Kuchar down the stretch at Royal Birkdale.
NBC Sports also confirmed a 67% streaming boost on the 2017 Open, with 125 million minutes streamed making it the most-streamed golf tournament in the network's history.
We await to see if similar numbers stack up this side of the pond from Sky Sports Golf - we imagine they will be very similar.
