ProQuip HTX Ultimate Waterproofs Key Features

  • Reflective metallic lining transfers heat to the lower back and trunk
  • Four-way stretch fabric
  • Storm cuffs keep wrists and forearms free of excess moisture

It's fitting that ProQuip, a brand based in Scotland, is a specialist in waterproof clothing. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of playing golf where the game was born, its weather can be pretty volatile.

ProQuip's newest offering in the waterproof sector is the Ultimate HTX jacket and trousers. The suit combines a variety of different innovative features designed specifically to ensure you can tackle the elements without having to walk in after nine.

Possibly the most interesting innovation is the use of a metallic lining in the jacket, which is designed to recycle your body's warmth to keep you nice and cosy when temperatures start to drop.

To test out how well the Ultimate HTX suit would hold up against the elements, I took them out for a spin on a cold and rainy day at Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate.

Let's get into it.

Before we dive into performance, let's first talk about looks. So far every waterproof jacket I've tested this year has been black, so there is certainly a theme emerging for waterproofs in 2024.

Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. You're not really wearing waterproofs to garner compliments from your playing partners, and with the potential for mud splattering in winter means that black is realistically the most sensible choice.

Other than the Ultimate HTX branding on the chest and ProQuip logo on the hem and collar, there is little else to report.

ProQuip has decided to keep things simple, and I respect that. It should be mentioned that there are also Blue/Black and Grey/Black colour options available that have a little more going on.

The trousers also keep things pretty toned down, with the sam branding places on the heel and back pocket.

In terms of fit, the jacket is on the slightly bulkier end of the spectrum, however there has clearly been an effort made to limit the amount of fabric between you and the ball when stood in the address position, which gives the impression of a sleeker silhouette, which made a big difference when swinging.

From a feel perspective, the jacket and trousers both provide plenty of room, and the elasticated waist on the trousers is particularly generous meaning you can wear them on their own, or over a pair of normal trousers if required.

The jacket is also easily slipped over a few layers and when swinging doesn't bunch up in any awkward areas, which can sometimes happen, particularly in the arm pit region.

Both the jacket and trousers also both offer a good level of adjustability. As mentioned previously, the trousers have an elasticated waist, but also belt loops incase needed. Around the ankles, there are also waterproof zips and velcro tabs so you can adjust the taper around the heel.

For the jacket, side adjustor tabs can be found on the side of the body, while a drawstring at the hem means you can tighten or loosen the jacket in seconds.

While looks and comfort are key, the real litmus test for a set of waterproofs is how they perform when the weather begins to frown.

Before we get onto the rain, I want to first touch on the cold. As previously mentioned this jacket benefits from a metallic lining which is designed to reflect the heat your body emits so as to keep your trunk warmer.

I can attest to the fact that this is one of the warmest waterproof jackets iv'e ever worn. The design does a fantastic job of both retaining warmth, but also preventing the wind from cutting straight through you.

I mentioned this jacket was slightly bulkier than other options on the market in 2024, and that extra thickness really does pay off. This jacket is is a serious all purpose waterproof that could easily be worn with just a polo underneath. Scotland's temperatures have clearly inspired the design of the Ultimate HTX and the payoff is fantastic.

The trousers also offer excellent levels of warmth and again, the added thickness really pays off, especially if like me, you prefer not to wear a pair of golf trousers underneath your waterproofs.

Now, onto the main event. How does this waterproof set hold up in the rain?

I've experienced some pretty testy rain in this set and I can confirm it does a superb job of keeping the rain out.

The material held up against even the most aggressive downpours, and the seam sealed zips also prevent any moisture getting through into the pockets or on the chest.

Verdict

I absolutely love the Ultimate HTX suit and it's a perfect choice for golfers who play in particularly cold conditions.

If you want something that takes up as little space as possible and will hold out a brief shower, then probably look elsewhere, however if you want to tackle gale force winds and torrential rain, then this suit should is well worth your time and money.

With the jacket coming in at only £140, and the trousers at £100, this combo also offers excellent value for money. Throw in the fact that ProQuip offers a three year waterproof warranty, and you've got yourself an absolute steal.
