Winter is here, which means one thing: time to get suited up for the wind and rain. Thankfully PING is here to help, with the brand having released a new Taran 3L waterproof jacket and trousers to keep you dry and warm out on the course.
Featuring a fully seam-sealed construction, three-layer stretch waterproof fabric, and adjustability courtesy of cuff tabs and a shock cord hem, this rain suit is built for performance.
Staying dry is the priority when it comes to waterproof clothing, but warmth, style and comfort are also key considerations.
So, to test this new rain suit, I took it out on a wet and windy day at Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate.
Let's get into it.
Starting with looks and fit, this set comes in all black, but a blue jacket is also available for those who want a bit more colour.
In all honesty, there isn't a great deal to say with regard to the design of this jacket from a purely visual perspective.
The all-black design is broken up briefly by grey detailing on the pockets and the logos, but other than that, it's kept very simple.
In terms of fit, the Taran 3L is athletic but still offers plenty of room. I opted for a medium, but standing at six foot one, I would probably opt for a large in the future, just to give me that extra space for layering, especially under the arms.
In terms of features, the jacket features two front pockets, adjustable tabs and an adjustable shock cord hem.
The pockets offer plenty of storage for keeping things out of the rain, while the cuffs and cord hem allow you to easily taper the jacket's fit.
The trousers also have adjustable waist tabs zip-leg openings, which allows the trousers to be easily put on or taken off even when wearing shoes. With two side pockets and one on the back, there is also plenty of space to store belongings.
The jacket and trousers are both very comfortable, and thanks to the level of adjustability available, they can both be easily tailored to a perfect fit once purchased.
It's worth noting that the trousers also offer plenty of space to be worn over normal trousers, but even when worn on their own, they still feel nice and soft against your skin.
In terms of protection, the trousers and jacket did a fantastic job keeping me warm and dry on the course. Both items are waterproof to 20,000mm, which is more than enough to keep out what the British weather can throw at you.
Verdict
PING is one of the most dependable brands in the business, and the Taran 3L rain suit is a very solid performer across the board.
The styling is a little plain, but the performance can't be argued with. If you're looking to purchase a new set of waterproofs this winter, the Taran 3L suit should be high on your shopping list.
