Scheffler with a 3 on a long par 5, and a 5 on a very short par 3! Golf is nuts #USOpen
— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) June 18, 2022
Rory McIlroy found birdie at No.11 and smoked his drive down the left hand side of the faiway at 12.
But he did exactly what Scottie Scheffler did and left his approach in the rough in front of the green.
After a poor chip, his par putt came up well short and he was fighting to avoid a double.
As ever, McIlroy answers and he manages to find a bogey.
It was really out of nowhere, though.
Why do you do this to us Rors?!
Justin Thomas has been speaking to the media after his rules issue earlier where his tee shot nestled right next to a drain.
Thomas hit off an awkward stance and it led to a bogey.
He said: "It just was -- to me it was around a drain, and very clearly it my stance and my ball was sitting differently than it would be if that drain was not there.
"I called an official to get a ruling on it, and in the spirit of the game I didn't -- I wasn't going to hit the drain.
"I felt like I very easily could have told her that I was going to and gotten a free drop, but I wasn't.
"Yeah, it's unfortunate because it was a great drive, and I had a pitching wedge in my hands, and I could only hit the ball -- I only hit it 100 yards.
"I mean, yeah, it's very clear that my stance and where my ball was was altered and sitting bad because of that drain, but didn't get a drop from it.
"That's just how it is. You have to be able to hit the drain to get a drop."
That's a superb round of 67 from Zalatoris.
He finishes the day at 4-under par and he is currently one shot ahead of Rahm and Fitzpatrick.
Scheffler has dropped another on 13 to fall back into the pack on 2-under.
Scheffler is really leaking oil here.
After a double at 11, Scheffler compounds the mistake with a bogey at 12.
He's back to 3-under par and now one behind Zalatoris, who is thru 17.
Rahm buries a 15 footer from left to right for par on the 9th.
The defending champion remains just one shot behind Scheffler and Zalatoris.
Scheffler has once again found trouble with his approach shot at 12.
Scheffler makes a mess of two chip shots and he then two putts for a double-bogey five to fall back to 4-under par alongside Zalatoris, who is thru 15 holes.
Rahm and Wise both make bogeys on 8 and 9 to fall back to 3-under par.
19 players are now within six shots of the lead.
It's really hard out here right now.
Zalatoris rolls in a birdie from six feet on 15 to move into a tie for second on 4-under par.
He might be tied for the lead soon given Scheffler's troubles.
Scheffler is in huge trouble on the par-3 11th.
The Masters champion has gone over the back of the green and into the penalty area. It looks playable but it's in juicy rough and he is short-sighted to the flag.
He will do well to get out of here with a bogey.
Scheffler looked in severe danger of handing one back on the 10th after finding sand with his approach shot but he splashed out to six feet and made the par save.
He remains two shots clear on 6-under par.
Rahm, who is on 4-under par in tied second with Wise, just drove up against a tree on the par-5 8th and is in danger of handing one back
Morikawa misses a six-footer for bogey on the 7th and it's a double.
He now falls back to 2-under par.
Pars feel like birdies out here at the minute as the wind is howling and the greens are like concrete.
Rahm drills home a putt from outside of 20 feet on the par-4 7th.
The defending champion is now two shots back on 4-under par.
Scheffler is two shots ahead once again as Morikawa makes bogey on 6.

But he missed the putt. It's just not happening for him today.

It's another bogey for Rory McIlroy on 6 and he's back to 1-under par.
Hugely disappointing.
Patrick Rodgers chips in for eagle on 8 to join the leaders on 4-under par.
Rodgers has never won on the PGA Tour.
What a week it would be to change that record.
Jon Rahm just missed a six-footer for birdie on 5 and he remains a shot off the pace.
It's an incredible bogey in the end for Morikawa as he drains a putt from all of 25 feet on the 4th.
That could be huge come Sunday evening.

Big trouble for the leaders.
Wise makes bogey on 5 to fall to 4-under par.
Meanwhile, Morikawa is having a mare down the 4th.
He drove into the deep stuff and after chipping out onto the fairway, he has just fatted his third shot well short of the green.
Huge trouble for Morikawa here.
Fitzpatrick two-putts the par-5 8th for birdie and he moves to 3-under par for the tournament.
The Englishman has been in superb form of late on the PGA Tour but has not been able to bang down the door for the win.
Could this be his week on the biggest stage of them all?
Sam Burns, playing alongside Fitzpatrick, made bogey to fall back to 2-under.
Aaron Wise moves into a tie for the lead on 5-under par with Collin Morikawa after holing a 12-footer for birdie at the 4th.
Rory McIlroy tried to follow Wise in on the same line but his birdie attempt misses on the right side. McIlroy remains at 2-under par and three back.

McIlroy is now three shots behind Collin Morikawa.
Joel Dahmen, the joint overnight leader, has just bogeyed the 1st.
Xander Schauffele wasn't out of this to start the day. Neither was Brooks Koepka.
But both are having a dreadful start.
Schauffele made par at the first hole but has since followed that with five bogeys and one grim double bogey to turn in 42.
Koepka is 5-over par after nine holes...
