Rory McIlroy caught an outrageous stray by Reince Priebus during a United States Presidential debate on ABC News.

Priebus, an American lawyer and politician who served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 2011 to 2017, was picking holes in Vice President Kamala Harris' latest comments in the 2024 U.S. Presidential race when he rather unnecessarily brought up McIlroy's collapse at the US Open.

Prebus compared Harris' comments about the economy and immigration to McIlroy throwing away a first major title in 10 years when missing two short putts on the closing holes to hand the US Open to Bryson DeChambeau.

McIlroy held a two-shot lead with five holes to play at the 2024 US Open. But he would bogey 15, miss a three-footer for par on 16 and a four-footer for par on 18 to lose by one.

As we join the video clip that was posted to X / Twitter by @TourGolf, we hear Priebus say: 'She [Harris] wanted to clarify the two most important issues that are facing these two candidates, the economy and immigration, and she bombed like Rory at the US Open, and she went out there and said there is nothing she would do that would be different to Joe Biden."

McIlroy was so distraught about his late US Open collapse this June that he took an extended break out of the sport to get over it.

The World No.3 will now enter an 11th year since his last major victory dating back to the 2014 US PGA.

There would be no sweeter moment for McIlroy to get back on the major ladder than to slip on a Green Jacket in his next attempt at The Masters in April 2025.

Should McIlroy win his first Masters he would join a select group of players to complete the career grand slam.

Only five golfers in the modern era have won the grand slam: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Woods and Nicklaus are the only players to have won each of the four majors at least three times.
