Justin Rose drops incredible Ryder Cup story: "Chaos! It was terrible..."
England's Justin Rose has dropped an incredible story of the chaos Colin Montgomerie caused with the 2010 Ryder Cup captain's pick phone calls.
England's Justin Rose knows what it's like to get good news and bad news when it comes to Ryder Cup captain's picks.
The Englishman famously missed out on his first Ryder Cup in more than a decade when Padraig Harrington decided to go in a different direction for the 2021 edition in Whistling Straits.
Rose was also left crestfallen when Colin Montgomerie decided not to pick him for the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.
For the very first time in 2023, Rose was finally told 'yes' by Luke Donald when he needed to rely on a pick.
Waiting for that phone call, as we know, is almost as nerve-wracking as that very first tee shot on Friday morning.
The 43-year-old gave us a fantastic insight into the subject when he appeared on the most recent episode of The Rick Shiels Golf Show.
Turns out, Monty caused chaos 14 years ago as there were four players playing the same PGA Tour event that were waiting for his call.
Rose, Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington were playing the Turning Stone Resort Championship.
"In 2010, Monty didn't pick me," Rose told the podcast.
"There was some general chaos around that particular day as well.
"There were four of us [waiting for calls] Paul Casey, Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington and myself and we were actually playing a tournament in New York at the time and I was in the second last group.
"[And] the Golf Channel camera is burning a hole in the back of my head while I'm warming up because they are literally waiting for me to pick the phone up and take the call from Monty.
"And literally, I received the call two minutes before teeing off and the call doesn't go my way and I'm like, 'Oh, that's sad, how do I pick myself up from this and go and win this tournament?'
"So that wasn't ideal. But then Casey was playing with Harrington in the same group and Harrington's wife was giving him the thumbs up like, 'Yes, it's all good!'
"And then Paul is looking over like, 'What about me?'
"And he's like, ninth in the world and didn't get picked and he's in the same group as Harrington so that was awkward.
"And then Luke, on that particular day got picked [and] he went out in 29, got the word that he got picked and came back in 43.
"It caused chaos everywhere! It was terrible. I think they've learned how to do it now a little bit."
Monty's European side went on to win the 2010 Ryder Cup, beating Team USA by one point.
The contest went down to the wire, with Graeme McDowell eventually defeating Hunter Mahan 3&1 in the anchor match to regain the Cup.
Mahan, you might recall, was reduced to tears and comforted by Phil Mickelson.
Rose later revealed the snub left a scar on Casey and was one of the driving factors in the Englishman not rejoining the European Tour in 2015.
Back then, Casey decided to play solely on the PGA Tour.
Then-captain Darren Clarke said: "It is obvious that representing Europe in the Ryder Cup is not on Paul’s priority list, which is disappointing, but I wish him all the best for the future."
There's no doubt that at some point in the future Rose would like to lead Europe as captain.
But the timing, in his opinion, is a big call.
He still wants to play and believes the perfect time to take the reins will be the day when he stops believing he can win.
Hopefully for Rosey, that day won't arrive anytime soon.
