Tommy Fleetwood has taken to X / Twitter to offer his deepest sympathies to the families of children that were tragically killed and injured in his home town of Southport on Monday.

According to local police, a 17-year-old suspect from Banks, who is born in Cardiff, is being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder following the incident on Hart Street in Southport, Merseyside.

Police have seized a knife.

The incident is not being treated as terror related, but the motive 'remains unclear', confirm police.

Three children have been killed.

Multiple other children are understood to be injured or in a critical condition.

Two adults also have critical injuries.

The 'ferocious' knife attack, according to police, took place at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga event.

In total, 11 patients with stab injuries were treated by the ambulance service and some were taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

A major incident was declared at 11.47am on Monday.

After learning of the tragic news coming out of his home town of Southport, Fleetwood, who is competing for Team GB at the Olympics this week, tweeted:

"I am absolutely heartbroken at the news coming out of Southport today. My thoughts are with the families of the children who were tragically killed and injured. What they are going through is unimaginable. As a parent myself it’s difficult to even comprehend what has happened and what they have ahead of them, but I know the whole community in Southport will come together to support them. My heart will always be in Southport and together with my family we are sending all of our love to the people of my home town."

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy confirmed "the offender armed with a knife walked into the premises and started to attack the children inside."

She added: "When [officers] arrived, they were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had suffered serious injuries…

"As a mum of two daughters, and the nanna of a five-year-old grand-daughter, I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering the families of the victims are currently going through, and I want to send them our heartfelt condolences and sympathies."

Chief Constable Kennedy added two adults were injured while "bravely" trying to protect the children.

"We believe that the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked," she said.

One local said one of the two adults injured in the attack locked herself in a room with children to protect them as eyewitnesses reported hearing screaming and seeing children “covered” in blood, suffering stab wounds.

GolfMagic would also like to offer our deepest sympathies to all the families of the children who were tragically killed and injured in the Southport attack today.
