Scottie Scheffler makes surprising admission after winning PGA Tour player of the year award
Runaway World No.1 Scottie Scheffler has offered his thoughts about winning the PGA Tour's player of the year award ahead of Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele.
Newly-crowned PGA Tour player of the year winner Scottie Scheffler has revealed his personal highlight from a preposterous 2024 season.
Scheffler, the runaway World No.1, collected his third Jack Nicklaus award on 10 December after winning 91 per cent of the vote.
He beat Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele to the title, days after winning his ninth victory of the calendar year in the Bahamas.
It means he has become only the second man since Tiger Woods to win the award in three consecutive seasons.
Woods, who turns 49 next month, won the award 11 times in his illustrious career.
The 15-time major champ collected the award 11 times between 1999 and 2003 and won three on the spin between 2005-2007.
Scheffler won seven Tour events in 2024, including the gold medal at Le Golf National in Paris.
He also won his second Masters title in April after fending off challenges at Augusta National from Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa.
What stood out, to Scheffler, was that back nine in Paris.
Scheffler pipped Tommy Fleetwood to gold in an enthralling finale where Hideki Mastuyama, McIlroy and Jon Rahm were also in contention.
The American, now 28, hit six birdies on the back nine to win by one stroke from the Englishman.
"I think we're always looking to compare somebody to Tiger Woods," Scheffler told reporters about receiving his latest accolade.
"I saw it a lot growing up but there's really only one Tiger - that's just kind of it."
Asked what stood out for him this year, he offered: "I would say the nine holes that kind of sticks out to me the most maybe would be the back nine at the Olympics.
"The way that Teddy and I kind of finished off that tournament was pretty cool."
Scheffler's 2024 season was nothing short of remarkable.
He maintained the top spot in the OWGR, did not miss a cut and recorded a Tour-best 16 top-10s in 19 starts.
Scheffler's scoring average (68.65) was also the lowest scoring average on Tour.
The player of the year award is determined by the members who have played in at least 15 events.
The voting period ran from 25 November to 4 December.
