Scottie Scheffler says his golf coach Randy Smith is 'out of his mind' but is a genius when it comes to understanding the finer details of his swing.

So much so that Smith was able to work out the subtle tweak Scheffler made before the Presidents Cup without being told what the golfer was working on.

Scheffler opened up on the subject in the most recent edition of GOLF's Subpar.

Smith and Scheffler have been working together since the American was six years old.

His coach has never tried to change his unique footwork, now known as the Scheffler Shuffle, because it is part of the DNA of his swing.

Scheffler said before the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal he tasked Smith with seeing if he could work out what he was working on without telling him.

"Randy is like — I mean, he's totally out of his mind," Scheffler told the pod

"But when it comes to the golf swing, he is such a genius. He's like a little savant.

"I was out there before the Presidents Cup and I was telling Randy, I was like, 'I'm trying something but I'm not going to tell you what it is.

"'I'm going to see if you can figure it out.'

"And he watched me hit like five balls and pointed out exactly what I was doing, it was the tiniest movement in my left hand with the grip.

"And I was like, 'how did you do that?'"

Scheffler went on to secure three points for Team USA in their decisive victory over Mike Weir's Internationals.

The World No.1 is currently enjoying some time off after an exhausting season that has seen him win seven times, including a second Masters title.

He also won Olympic gold.

Over the weekend, Scheffler joined the set of ESPN's On College Game Day.

There, he cracked a joke about his arrest before the second round of the PGA Championship in Louisville.

Scheffler is likely to be back in action in December at Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge.

He is not in the field for the forthcoming ZOZO Championship in Japan.
