Rory McIlroy told he 'shouldn't be in conversation' after PGA Tour announcement
Rory McIlroy has been nominated for the PGA Tour's player of the year award alongside World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and two-time major champion Xander Schauffele.
Golf fans have been furiously debating whether Rory McIlroy deserves to be nominated for the PGA Tour's player of the year award.
The Northern Irishman started the year with a bang, winning the Dubai Desert Classic for a record fourth time in January before heading to the United States.
He then won the team event in New Orleans alongside Shane Lowry and followed that with victory at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Earlier in the month, McIlroy, 35, rounded off 2024 by winning the DP World Tour Championship and sealed the top spot in the Race to Dubai for the sixth time.
Overall, McIlroy entered 19 PGA Tour events and finished ninth in the FedEx Cup.

McIlroy recorded seven top-10s, missed one cut and finished sixth in the scoring average (69.914).
It could be argued McIlroy was on the wrong side of the draw at a windy Augusta National after he finished in a tie for 22nd at The Masters.
Elsewhere, McIlroy finished in a tie for 12th at the PGA Championship, missed the cut at The Open and, of course, came up agonisingly short of winning his fifth major at the U.S. Open.
McIlroy was nominated for the player of the year award alongside Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.
Scheffler won seven times (Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players, Masters, RBC Heritage, the Memorial, Travelers Championship and the Tour Championship at East Lake).
The American also secured the gold medal at the Olympic games.
Scheffler recorded 16 top-10s and did not miss a cut.
Schauffele posted 15 top 10s and also did not miss a cut.
And he finally broke through in the majors, first winning the PGA Championship at Valhalla and following that with a two-shot victory at The Open in July.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the announcement has been met with mixed views.
Some have suggest McIlroy does not even deserve to be in the conversation.
One X user wrote: "Was Rory even an option? You shouldn't win player of the year without one major. Rory will never win a major again so he shouldn't even be brought up in these kind of conversations."
Another added: "Xander gave it a ride, but I don't see how Scottie doesn't take it."
This person wrote: "I'm guessing Rory didn't even want to be a nominee against those two."
The player of the year is determined by a vote from PGA Tour members who have played in at least 15 events.
Voting will close on 4 December, with the winner announced before the end of the year.
Elsewhere, Nick Dunlap, 20, Matthieu Pavon, 32, MaX Greyserman, 29 and 30-year-old Jake Knapp have been nominated for the rookie of the year award.
