Rory McIlroy tight-lipped over what was so funny at RBC Canadian Open

World number three Rory McIlroy got himself back into the RBC Canadian Open with a decent third round at Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

Rory McIlroy's late range session on Friday night appeared to pay dividends as the Northern Irishman played his way back into contention at the RBC Canadian Open.

McIlroy, 35, carded a five-under 65 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

His charge was ignited thanks to a sublime eagle at the fourth.

Three more birdies on the front nine followed.

McIlroy would've likely been frustrated at the conclusion of his round, though, as he dropped shots at the 10th and the 17th.

Once again McIlroy made a meal out of attempting to lay up from a fairway bunker and made a sloppy bogey at the penultimate hole.

With 18 holes left to play, McIlroy was on seven-under, trailing the leaders Robert MacIntyre and Ryan Fox by three.

The Scot and Kiwi got their rounds underway when McIlroy finished.

"I got off to a pretty fast start, three-under through five and five-under through nine," McIlroy said.

"Wish I had made a couple more coming in, but overall a good day's work and hopefully it puts me within touching distance going into tomorrow."

He headed straight to the range after an off-colour 72 on Friday.

He had played the opening round with a sore head after he celebrated his caddie Harry Diamond's birthday earlier in the week with a few glasses of red wine.

McIlroy said technical work wasn't needed.

"I just felt like I just got a little out of sync, so just worked a little bit on sort of tempo and rhythm and just slowing the transition down from the top," he said.

"That was really it. It wasn't a ton of technical stuff, but just needed to try to sync it up again."

McIlroy played his third round alongside Tom Kim

Kim also shot the same score as McIlroy.

Both players were seen chuckling together throughout their round and at one point appeared to be in fits of laughter.

But neither player refused to divulge what was so funny.

"Not sure," McIlroy told reporters with a wry smile when asked what tickled the pair.

Kim said: "I got to keep that between us."
