Report: PGA Tour boss desperate for 'one-year mulligan' after bungling LIV deal
PGA Tour policy board member Joe Ogilvie says Jay Monahan is desperate to make amends after bungling the 6 June 2023 peace deal with LIV Golf's backers.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan 'probably wishes he had a one-year mulligan', according to policy board member Joe Ogilvie.
Ogilvie made the claim in a recent interview with Golfweek.
The former PGA Tour winner also confirmed the rumour Patrick Cantlay wields a great deal of influence isn't too far wide of the mark.
As for Monahan, Ogilvie told the publication he believes some PGA Tour members have started believing in the embattled chief once again.
The 54-year-old enraged his membership on 6 June 2023 when he appeared alongside LIV chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan on national television to announce the 'framework agreement' with the breakaway tour's Saudi backers.
Rory McIlroy's NSFW reaction was captured by the Netflix cameras and his resignation was called for by multiple high-profile golfers.
Xander Schauffele was one of them.
Even Tiger Woods was said to be apoplectic with rage.
It took Woods months to offer comment about the peace deal and when he did the 15-time major champ made it clear Monahan's days of making deals in secret were a thing of the past.
"That can't happen again," Woods said last November.
Monahan had to take a medical leave of absence in the aftermath of announcing the seismic deal with LIV's backers.
When he returned, he confirmed stress had taken its toll.
But Monahan insisted he was the right man for the job and dismissed talk he would have to resign.
The aforementioned Ogilvie said Monahan 'got on the back foot' with the bungled rollout of the framework agreement.
"But Jay is a survivor," he said.
"He's got a huge amount of respect from his team. The players over time went from, ‘Let's get rid of this guy’ to 'This is the guy who’s gonna lead us.'
"He's incredibly good when he’s engaged with sponsors, he's incredibly good one-on-one with the guys.
"I think he wishes he had a one-year mulligan. It was obviously an incredibly stressful time. He might get the Comeback Player of the Year award."
Ogilvie, unsurprisingly, said Monahan has his full support.
"He's got the respect of other leaders of the game and I think he's got the respect of the PIF," he said.
