PGA Tour golfer channels inner Phil Mickelson with perfect pace of play analogy
PGA Tour member Michael Kim has offered his thoughts on the proposed changes to the North American circuit's pace of play policy.
PGA Tour golfer Michael Kim has offered his thoughts on the proposed pace of play changes by arguing: "Just because you tell certain drivers to speed up doesn't mean there'll be less traffic."
Kim posted his thoughts on X on 30 October, a few hours after PGA Tour members were sent a detailed email explaining the seismic changes that could be coming to the North American circuit from 2026.
The proposals will be voted on by the policy board members on 18 November, but it's more than likely they will be given the green light.
That's because there is a widespread belief that board members Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Peter Malnati and Adam Scott have no reason to vote against them.
What also caught golf fans' attention was the tournament committee's ideas to combat pace of play.
You can read about them here.
Kim, who is no stranger to offering his opinion on the platform, believes there is simply no quick fix.
"The slow play issue on the PGA Tour is NOT just about a few slow guys," he wrote.
"It's way more of an issue of too many guys on a golf course issue.
"Have you guys ever played in a big shotgun tournament with threesomes or foursomes on every hole?
"Or even a public muni where tee times are stacked?
"It's a pace of play nightmare because there's no flow.
"It's not just because guys need to play a bit faster.
"Guys lose golf balls, three-putt, need a ruling, all these things end up causing a big jam.
"Just because you tell certain drivers to go faster doesn't mean there isn't going to be traffic during rush hour."
His comment reminded us at GolfMagic of the time Phil Mickelson took on the USGA when the governing body proposed reducing the length of driver shafts with an ice cream analogy.
Remind yourself of that moment here:
Kim continued: "The recent changes aren't going to be a big change but just telling slow guys to play faster won't fix the problem.
"I'm the one that has to play with these slow guys and it's super annoying but there’s no quick fix unfortunately."
