The FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis marks the first of the FedEx Cup Playoffs events on the PGA Tour this month.
It was supposed to be a 70-man event but record three-time FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy, who currently lies second in the standings, decided to take the week off.
The field is therefore down to 69 players.
The top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings following the conclusion of play this Sunday will advance to next week's BMW Championship.
Akshay Bhatia hit the front in the first round with a blistering 8-under 62.
The left-handed American leads England's Tommy Fleetwood by one.
Fleetwood closed out his round with four straight birdies as he goes in search of a first PGA Tour title.
After the BMW Championship, the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings will then advance to the season-ending Tour Championship to fight out the FedEx Cup at East Lake.
