Beau Hossler fired a brilliant opening round of 10-under 60 to take the early lead at a weather-interrupted Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Thursday's play was completely washed out due to rainfall in the area caused by Tropical Storm Debby.

Play eventually got under way after a three-hour delay on Friday morning, and it was Hossler who burst out the blocks to take the lead.

Hossler, 29, opened with four straight birdies and then went one better on the par-5 5th when tapping home an eagle from just two feet to move to 6-under par thru five holes.

The World No.93 then added another birdie on the par-4 8th to go out in 28.

Hossler birdied the 10th to then move it to 8-under par for the tournament.

He would hand his first shot back at the 11th but would immediately recover it when nearly making an ace on the tough par-3 12th.

Hossler then buried an 18-footer for another birdie on the 14th, and he added another at the par-5 15th when getting up and down from the front greenside bunker.

Hossler made pars to the house and it all added up to a stunning 10-under 60

He was bidding to become the 15th player to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour over the closing holes but he came up just shy.

His best chance of a birdie on the last three holes came from 17 feet on the 17th but he left the putt in the jaws.

He saved a clutch 10-footer for par on the 18th.

As it stands, Hossler has a healthy advantage on the leaderboard but there are a number of players still yet to complete their first rounds.

Billy Horschel, who finished T2 at The Open last month, is surging up the board as he goes in search of a ninth PGA Tour title.

The PGA Tour still plans to get all 72 holes completed despite losing a full day's play on Thursday.

Officials hope to get the second round completed by Saturday and then it's anticipated 36 holes will get played on Sunday.

If that doesn't happen, then the tournament will likely go into a Monday finish.

PGA Tour pros are this week battling to make the top 70 to play their way into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which starts next week at the FedEx St Jude Championship.

One of those players is Hossler, who started this week week 87th in the standings.

While still very early days in the tournament, Hossler now has a golden chance to pick up his maiden PGA Tour title.

Hossler came closest to winning his first PGA Tour title when losing out in a playoff to Ian Poulter at the 2018 Houston Open.

He has struggled for form this season with just two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2024.

Hossler also arrived at the Wyndham Championship off the back of back-to-back missed cuts.

He won the Haskins Award in college as the top collegiate golfer in the United States in 2016.
