The Open Championship Second Round: LIVE leaderboard and updates from Royal Troon

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the second round of The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Shane Lowry has surged into the outright lead in the second round of the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Lowry, 37, overcame a disastrous double-bogey six on the 11th to card a solid 2-under 69.

The Irishman recovered his round with birdies at the 16th and 18th to set the 36-hole clubhouse target of 7-under par.

Lowry is bidding to land his second Open title, having won his first major one home soil at Portrush in 2019.

The Open will be heading there again in 2025.

Lowry has opened up a two-shot lead on overnight leader Dan Brown, who carded a 1-over 72 and fellow Englishman Justin Rose, who shot a remarkable 3-under 68.

Brown is looking to become the first player to win on their major debut since Keegan Bradley at the 2011 US PGA.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler also remains in the mix following a consecutive round of 70.

Scheffler finds himself five shots off the pace heading into the weekend on 2-under par alongside Billy Horschel and Dean Burmester

Xander Schauffele, Jason Day, Corey Conners and Patrick Cantlay are a further shot back on 1-under par.

Schauffele posted a 1-over 72, while Cantlay vaulted up the board with a 3-under 68.

Englishman Matthew Jordan sits at level par alongside Chilean LIV Golf star Joaquin Niemann

Notable players who missed the cut include Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Ludvig Aberg, Will Zalatoris, Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, and Tiger Woods

Hatton and McIlroy are headed home

Hatton +8 (77), McIlroy +11 (75)

Hatton and McIlroy are both headed home. Hatton had the cut line in his sights at the turn, but five bogeys on the back nine sunk his hopes by the time he finished up at 18.

McIlroy has very little to take from the week as he's endured some of the worst golf of his career over the two days. It looks like there might be some lingering scar tissue from his collapse at the US Open last month.

Back to the drawing board for the European pair.

20:24
Huge birdie for Homa

Homa +6 (72)

What a way to make the cut! Homa holed a lengthy putt on 18, and it looks like he'll be teeing it up tomorrow at Royal Troon.

20:20
Two big birdie putts coming up

Both Hatton and Homa have lengthy birdie putts on the 18th.

They need to hole them to make the cut.

Nervy times.

20:17
Harman makes the cut

Harman +4 (73)

Defending champion Brian Harman made a birdie on the final hole, and he's made the cut with two shots to spare.

Bryson bows out

DeChambeau +9 (F)

It was a week to forget for DeChambeau. The US Open champion didn't have his best stuff this week and looked a long way off the player who lifted a major championship less than a month ago.

20:03
Homa needs a birdie to make the cut

Homa +7 (16)

A birdie on the 16th means Homa will need a birdie on one of the last two holes to make the cut.

20:01
Another dropped shot for Hatton

Hatton +7 (16)

That was one of the worst putts we've seen Hatton hit today.

He only had about eight feet for par on the 16th but dribbled one short and left to see himself move above the cut line.

He needs at least one birdie, maybe two on the last two holes, to tee it up tomorrow.

19:55
Rahm and MacIntyre make the cut but disappointment for Fleetwood

Rahm +1, MacIntyre +5, Fleetwood +9

MacIntyre and Rahm should be delighted with how they managed to dig deep today.

They both managed to weather the tricky conditions to put together some excellent golf that will see them teeing it up this weekend.

Sadly, the same can't be said for Fleetwood, who will be heading home after a disappointing 4-over 75.

19:29
Two birdies on the bounce for Bob Mac

MacIntyre +5 (16)

What a turnaround for MacIntyre, as he now sits inside the cut line, courtesy of a birdie on the 16th hole.

After making two triple bogeys on the front, it looked like his chances were finished, but the Scot has shown real grit to get his tournament back on track.

19:26
Dropped shot for Rahm

Rahm +1 (16)

A disappointing dropped shot at the par-5 16th moves Rahm back to 1-over par.

19:19
A moment of joy for McIlroy

McIlroy +12 (14)

It's been a pretty rough day for the Northern Irishman, but a small smile crept across his face just now on the par-3 14th as his second shot from the sand finds the bottom of the cup for a birdie.

19:09
Another bogey for Hatton

Hatton +6 (13)

Someone might need to prepare the fire extinguisher, as Hatton looks like he's about to explode after another bogey on the 13th.

Hatton looked to be comfortably within the cut line, but it's all going wrong for the Englishman right now.

19:02
Big birdie for Bob Mac

MacIntyre +6 (15)

The crowds go wild as MacIntyre drops one in for birdie on the 15th hole to get within one of the cut line.

It's been quite a turnaround for the Scot who endured a nightmare start to his round.

18:59
Back-to-back birdies for Rahm

Rahm E (15)

After hitting his drive a whopping 402 yards on the 15th, Rahm managed to stuff his approach in close to set up his second birdie in two holes.

The Spaniard has the bit between his teeth right now, and we wouldn't put it past him picking up a couple more shots down the closing stretch.

18:53
Double bogey for Hatton

Hatton +5 (12)

The fiery Englishman look furious as he walks off the 12th green and cards his second double bogey of the day.

Having made three birdies on the front nine, he's now dropped three in the space of two holes on the easier back nine.

18:51
Birdie for Rahm

Rahm +1 (14)

The Spaniard is battling hard out there, and he's just birdied the 14th to move to one-over.

18:42
It could be all over for Fleetwood

Fleetwood  +9 (13)

Back-to-back bogeys 12 and 13 for Fleetwood probably call to a close his chances of making the cut.

He will need to pick up four shots down the final stretch, which looks like a tall order at the moment.

18:34
Back to level par for Niemann

Niemann E (15)

What a turnaround for Joaquin Niemann! The LIV Golf star made an eight on the par-3 8th, but he's battled back with four birdies on the back nine to return to level par.

A tough day for Thomas

Thomas +4 (78)

While 7-over is hardly the score JT would have hoped for today, it could have been much worse after his front nine.

Thankfully, the American managed to rally on the back nine, making three birdies, to repair some of the damage done on the opening stretch.

Justin Thomas

18:04
Big pars for Fleetwood and Bob Mac

MacIntyre +7, Fleetwood +7 (11)

Both Fleetwood and MacIntyre make crucial par saves on the 11th hole as they desperately attempt to get inside the cut line.

While MacIntyre looks energised, Fleetwood appears rather dejected.

It's been a bit of a slog for both players today.

17:52
Beautiful birdie finish for Rose

Rose -5 (68)

Justin Rose applies a fitting finish to what has been a superb round of golf with a lengthy birdie on the 18th.

The European Ryder Cup star has incredibly only dropped one shot in 36 holes of golf through the first two rounds, which is mind-boggling considering the conditions.

Rose now sits second with Dan Brown, just two shots back from Shane Lowry.

17:41
Back-to-back birdies for Hatton

Hatton +2 (8)

It's been an eventful front nine from Hatton.

He's just secured his second birdie in a row at the short 8th hole, taking his birdie total to three on the front nine.

Unfortunately, some early dropped shots have prevented him from climbing the leaderboard as high as he would like.

Fleetwood moves outside the cut line

Fleetwood +7 (9)

Fleetwood finishes the front nine with a double bogey, and he now finds himself outside the cut line at +7.

A number of people had earmarked the Englishman as a favourite this week, but unfortunately, he's not had his best stuff so far.

17:27
Birdie for Rose

Rose -4 (16)

Rose moves within three of Lowry with a lovely birdie on the par-5 16th.

It's been a links clinic from the former world No.1 today, he's managed to temper the wind remarkably well.

17:21
Super shot from Jon Rahm

Rahm +2 (9)

Having found the right rough with his tee shot, Rahm faced a tricky approach. He managed to dig it out and use the slope on the green to get the ball to feed all the way down, and then it disappeared.

It's a lovely way to finish the front nine, and he will now have the wind at his back on the way in.

There haven't been many birdie opportunities out there today, so that will feel like a real bonus.
