The Open Championship First Round: LIVE leaderboard and updates from Royal Troon

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the first round of The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

LIVE: THE OPEN LIVE SECOND ROUND SCORES AND UPDATES FROM ROYAL TROON

The opening day of the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon belongs to qualifier Dan Brown.

Brown, 29, fired a flawless first-round 65 on his Open Championship debut at the Ayrshire Links to open up a one-shot lead on 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry.

The Englishman came through Final Qualifying at West Lancs earlier this month in the same tournament where Sergio Garcia missed out.

Brown, who won the ISPS Handa World Invitational last season on the DP World Tour, birdied the 3rd, 5th, 10th, 11th, 16th and 18th in a bogey-free 65 to hit the front in his first-ever major start at the 152nd Open Championship.

"It did get dark out there and got a little bit tricky but the wind dropped as well," said Brown.

"You've got those bright yellow scoreboards out there so it's hard to miss, but I felt comfortable with my game out there.

"I'm very excited, but you've got to keep your feet on the ground, so I'm just going to go out and do the best I can [tomorrow]."

Brown is now seeking to become the first player since Keegan Bradley at the 2011 US PGA to win in their major debut.

Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry

Former Open champion and links specialist Lowry, 37, also carded a bogey-free round

Lowry went round in a 5-under 66 and also finished his round like Brown with a birdie-three on the tough par-4 18th.

Justin Thomas finds himself in solo third on 3-under par.

The two-time US PGA champion had a mixed bag featuring seven birdies, two bogeys and a double on the 12th.

US PGA champion Xander Schauffele is also off to a solid start following a 2-under 69.

Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is another big name firmly in the mix as he goes in search of a third career major title and first Claret Jug.

Scheffler birdied the last, tapping home from a foot, to card a respectable 1-under 70.

That sees him lie T11 after day one.

Elsewhere, it was a day to forget for two legends in the game, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy

McIlroy slumped to a dismal round of 7-over 78.

It's now coming up to a full 10 years since McIlroy last won his fourth major title at the 2014 US PGA.

The World No.2 made just one birdie on the round at the 3rd.

He bogeyed the 1st, 10th, 15th and 18th, and made two doubles on the 8th and 11th.

Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods

Woods also struggled to find any form, finishing the day on 8-over par.

Having not played much competitive golf in the lead-up to today, expectations were low, but by his own high standards, it was a very disappointing day for the 15-time major champion.

The halfway cut is expected to fall around the 5 or 6-over par mark on Friday evening, so the likes of Woods and McIlroy will need to put their foot down in the second round if they are to be around for the weekend.

Another player to struggle in the first round was US Open Bryson DeChambeau, who despite making eagle on the 16th went round in a 5-over 76.

Despite its short length, Troon's famous Postage Stamp 8th hole dished out some serious scorecard damage today.

McIlroy, Clark, and Morikawa all walked off with a double bogey, proving that par-3 holes don't have to be long to be tough.

Rory on the railway track

McIlroy is having a mare out here.

After a double at 8 and a bogey at 10, McIlroy has just sent his tee shot crashing onto the railway track down 11.

It's another double on the card as McIlroy's hopes of a first major title in 10 years already look doomed at 5-over par.

Long way to go for sure, but it's a horror start for the World No.2 at Troon.

Justin Thomas takes the lead

Thomas -3 (F)

It's a fantastic closing birdie from 20 feet for Justin Thomas on the par-4 18th.

The two-time US PGA champion now assumes the outright lead on 3-under par.

That could be hard to beat today.

Slow start for the new US Ryder Cup captain

Bradley +2 (6)

It's a slow start for the newly-appointed 2025 US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley.

He's 2-over par thru six holes, which is not the best start given he's played some of the easiest holes at Troon.

Bradley is still hoping to compete in the 2025 US Ryder Cup team as a player.

But many people including Rory McIlroy suggest a player-captain role is not possible these days with everything that comes with the responsbility.

If Bradley keeps playing like he is today though, he won't have to even worry about that.

12:39
It's a 69 for Justin Rose

Rose -2 (F)

Rose comes up just shy with his 20-footer for birdie on 18.

It's a tap-in par though and the Englishman currently finds himself in a tie for the lead on 2-under par.

Rose won his sole major to date at the 2013 US Open at Merion.

He has come close before at The Open, most notably a T2 in 2018.

Rose famously burst on the scene holing out with a wedge shot on the 72nd hole as a fresh-faced amateur 26 years ago at the 1998 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

JT joins the lead

Thomas -2 (17)

JT sends a dart into the par-3 17th.

He converts the birdie putt from five feet and moves into a logjam share of the lead at 2-under par.

Big trouble for Rory

McIlroy +2 (8)

Disaster strikes for McIlroy on the famous Postage Stamp par-3 8th.

McIlroy got too aggressive with his tee shot and his ball fell off the green to the right and into the bunker.

He then came up short with his second shot and the ball trundled back into the sand.

The World No.2 got his ball onto the surface but would miss the comeback 12-footer and it led to a costly double-bogey five.

It sends McIlroy to 2-over par.

11:50
'Oh come on, Bryson!'

B. DeChambeau +5 (8*)

It's a torrid start for Bryson and he's now playing the Postage Stamp.

And his tee shot is awful.

He's missed right and will be lucky to escape with a par.

"Oh, come on Bryson," he says as he marches after his golf ball.

"You get the impression he would rather be anywhere else than here at the moment," adds Sky Sports commentator Nick Dougherty.

11:46
Rahm knocks one in at the Postage Stamp

Rahm E, MacIntyre E, Fleetwood +2 (8)

Superb tee shots from three members of Europe's Ryder Cup winning team.

Each golfer is within 15 feet and two walk off the hole with a birdie.

Fleetwood manages to get one back, as does Rahm.

Can MacIntyre follow? Nope. His golf ball kisses the edge.

Sighs from the crowd.

It's fair to say the Scot got the biggest cheer of the day at the devilish par-three before he hit his tee shot.

11:42
Another one comes up short for JT

J. Thomas -1 (13)

Things are going south quickly for Thomas, who slices his tee shot right into the thick stuff at the 13th.

His approach comes up short and his chip had too much heat on it.

His par putt stops about one foot short and that's another bogey for the American..

11:37
Bryson's start is understandably the topic of conversation on social media...
11:35
DeChambeau double

DeChambeau +5, T. Kim +2, Aberg E (6)

It's all going wrong for the American.

He plays the longest hole on the course atrociously and looked visibly irked as he trudges off the green with his caddie Greg Bodine.

JT pays the price off a poor tee shot

Thomas -2 (12)

Who saw that coming?

Not me.

JT makes a double bogey six at the 12th after a losing his tee shot.

It looked like he was going to limit the damage, setting up a four-footer to salvage a five.

But he inexplicably misses and drops back to two-under alongside Russell Henley, Alex Noren, and Justin Rose.

Noren has the clubhouse lead, courtesy of a 69 earlier.

11:23
Hovland drops back

Hovland E, Harman -1, Theegala +1 (5)

The Norwegian began the year all over the place with his game.

He sacked his long-time swing coach, Joe Mayo, at the turn of the year.

But he reunited with the instructor before the US Open and is playing some good stuff again.

All three players miss the putting surface at the par-three fifth and pay the price with bogeys.

11:17
"It's a knock on your ego"

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald is praising Justin Rose in the commentary booth.

The experienced Englishman made his way to The Open through final qualifying a few weeks ago.

Rose has started superbly and is two-under after 13 holes and in a tie for second.

It is a knock on your ego, Donald tells Sky Sports of going through qualifying, but it gives you a real boost when you do.

11:14
Can McIlroy, Hatton and Homa take advantage of the par-five fourth?

McIlroy E, Hatton E, Homa +2 (4)

Sociable stuff from the trio at the fourth with each player within about five yards of each other.

After laying up, all three find the putting surface but nobody takes advantage.

Hatton's birdie putt up the hill is short and McIlroy's drifts by.

11:09
F-bomb from our leader

J. Thomas -4 (11)

JT wants to keep it together on the back nine now but he's just pulled his tee shot at the 12th miles left into a gorse bush.

The hot mics picked up exactly how he felt about it...

11:05
Fleetwood is struggling

Fleetwood +2, Rahm +1, MacIntyre E (5)

The par-three fifth claims two more victims in Fleetwood and MacIntyre.

The Englishman missed left and didn't have a huge amount of green to work with, leaving himself 20 feet to save his par.

Rahm is also in the bunker, but a sensational shot sets up a gimme.

MacIntyre has six feet for his par but misses.

Empathetic groans from the crowd...

11:00
Watch this miss from Bryson...
10:58
Another bogey for DeChambeau!

DeChambeau +3, Aberg -1, Kim E (4)

What is going on with Bryson?

He's made complete hash out of the par-five fourth.

Three lip outs in the first four holes mean he's going the wrong way very quickly.

10:56
McIlroy gets back to level

McIlroy E, Homa +2, Hatton E

McIlroy never misses from inside four feet does he?!

He's back to level.

Credit must go to his playing partner Hatton for his escape act at the third hole.

He found the ditch with his tee shot and, after his drop, knocked his approach just outside of McIlroy's.

Here's that opening bogey for McIlroy if you missed it
10:49
Saucy shot from McIlroy

McIlroy +1, Homa +2, Hatton E (3*)

From 116 yards, McIlroy sends a wedge into the third hole.

Can he knock it close? Of course.

There's some unreal check on that and he's got a great look to get back to level par...

10:47
Bryson is all over the shop

DeChambeau +2, Aberg -1, Kim +1 (3)

DeChambeau has dropped two shots already and his approach, from 298 yards, into the par-five fourth is in the thick rough.

He'll have a decent angle into the green, depending on his lie...

10:44
Rahm mistake

J. Rahm +1, Fleetwood +1, MacIntyre -1

Ordinarily Rahm would like his lips when standing on the tee box at a par-five.

But this is The Open and danger is always looming.

He misses the green with his third shot and has to go backwards, leaving himself off the green and a 30-foot bump-and-run to save par.

He misses and trudges off the green, muttering to himself.

Meanwhile Tommy Fleetwood's long-range effort to get back to level stops agonisingly short.

MacIntyre goes close for a birdie, too, but misses.
