Golf fans have been reacting on social media to news that John Daly's 'genuine players' Claret Jug for winning the 1995 Open at St Andrews has been put up for sale.

Daly, 58, initially sold his 1995 Claret Jug that he received from the Home of Golf back in April 2015.

Fast forward nine and half years, and Daly's Claret Jug has been put back up for auction by the current owner.

According to Golden Age Auctions, bidding on Daly's Claret Jug from winning The Open on the famed Old Course at St Andrews started at $500.

The current bid stands at $78,000 and it ends next weekend.

Daly won The Open in 1995 in a four-hole playoff against Costantino Rocca.

He shot 1-under par in the playoff to prevail by four shots.

Golden Age has confirmed Gary Player's 1974 Claret Jug recently sold for $481,068.

So perhaps we could be looking at a similar figure to that but we'll have to wait and see what is reaches next weekend.

When Daly initially sold his Claret Jug in April 2015, he wrote the following on a certificate of authenticity.

'I confirm that this is a genuine players trophy, which was presented to me by the R&A following my winning of the 1995 Open Championship held at St Andrews, Scotland, with a winning total of 282 strokes (69, 67, 69, 71) in a playoff with Costantino Rocca.

'The replica has been in my possession until purchased by --------- of ----------- in April 2015.'

A number of fans are questioning why the two-time major chakpion would feel a need to sell his coveted Claret Jug from The Open in the first place.

After all, his playoff victory over Rocca at the 1995 Open was arguably the biggest moment of his golf career.

'John must have been in need of the money badly," said one golf fan.

"Why would you sell this? Well I hope he uses it wisely and not spend the auction money to fast."

"It's so sad John Daly needed to sell such a prized possession," commented another Daly fan.

"JD must have been badly broke," tweeted one fan.

"Never knew he sold it in the first place, hopefully he's doing okay," wrote another.

In an interview some 10 years ago, Daly admitted he lost "somewhere in the region of $55m" between 1991 and 2007 as a result of gambling debts.

The man aptly nicknamed 'The Wild Thing' also won the 1991 US PGA

He has been divorced four times.

Daly won five PGA Tour titles in total.
