Brooks Koepka finally shifts 'wasted talent' Matthew Wolff from his LIV team
Brooks Koepka has finally been able to shift Matthew Wolff from his LIV Golf team after months publicly criticising the former PGA Tour pro.
Brooks Koepka has finally been able to shift Matthew Wolff from his LIV Golf team.
Wolff has been surplus to requirements for the 2023 PGA Championship winner for some time.
The five-time major champion has spent the last few months criticising Wolff in public and making what some could consider cheap shots.
Their feud began in the summer a week before the 151st Open at LIV Golf London whereby Koepka called Wolff a 'wasted talent'.
"I've basically given up on him," Koepka said before claiming that Wolff had given up during tournament rounds and displayed a poor attitude.
For his part Wolff acknowledged his attitude at times has been lacking but he did say Koepka's remarks were 'heartbreaking'.
Wolff's issues with mental health have been well-documented and those struggles have led to outbursts of anger on the course.
Both golfers can now look forward to a much different 2024 with the rival league after Koepka traded Wolff for Talor Gooch.
Gooch was playing for Bubba Watson's RangeGoats and was in red hot form all year, winning three times en route to becoming LIV's individual champion.
The transfer means Koepka's team will look decidedly different for the forthcoming campaign.
His younger brother Chase was part of Smash for LIV's first two seasons but he was relegated in 2023.
Chase was going to attempt to earn back his space in the LIV Golf League but recently withdrew from the forthcoming Promotions event, citing injury.
Koepka has also added Graeme McDowell to his team. The Northern Irishman faced an uncertain future after his contract had expired.
McDowell was part of the Cleeks, captained by Martin Kaymer, but it is understood the duo didn't see eye-to-eye.
The Gooch-Wolff trade is not the first of the offseason. Dustin Johnson has swapped Peter Uihlien for Harold Varner III.
What did Brooks Koepka say about Matthew Wolff?
Koepka previously told Sports Illustrated: "I mean, when you quit on your round, you give up and stuff like that, that's not competing.
"I'm not a big fan of that. You don't work hard. It's very tough. It's very tough to have even like a team dynamic when you've got one guy that won't work, one guy is not going to give any effort, he's going to quit on the course, break clubs, gets down, bad body language, it's very tough.
"I've basically given up on him—a lot of talent, but I mean the talent's wasted."
