ZOZO Championship to run into Monday finish following torrential rain
The second round of the ZOZO Championship has been postponed due to heavy rainfall.
Tiger Woods put together a masterclass of a performance during his first round at the ZOZO Championship in Japan, bouncing back after making three bogeys through as many holes to birdie nine of his last 14 holes to finish six under for the day, leaving him with a share of the lead alongside Gary Woodland. Woods would have been looking to strike while the irons were hot in his second round, but play was suspended due to heavy rainfall.
The tournament is now likely heading for a Monday finish, according to PGA Tour officials.
No players in the field even teed off on Friday before the officials made the decision to postpone the round, as the forecasts predicted more heavy rain after the course took a battering over night. Accoriding to local weather reports, there could be up to five inches of rainfall over the next 24 hours.
It is now planned that the players will start their second round between 6:30 - 8:30 am on Saturday morning (10:30pm - 12:30am BST).
“The golf course has already taken on 4/10s of an inch of rain, so it has actually reached the point of saturation and it's become unplayable,” Vice President of Rules and Competitions Gary Young said.
“With more rain in the forecast and three to five inches of rain for the day, we thought the right decision was to call play for the day.”
According to the PGA Tour Twitter feed, the tournament will now conclude on Monday due to the amount of water on the course.
Due to the amount of rain on Friday, Round 2 tee times @ZOZOCHAMP are delayed for Saturday. Per regulations, officials have determined the event will conclude on Monday, October 28, in order to complete 72 holes. https://t.co/zqi8N8kyPk
