What is a golf handicap?

A golf handicap is a numerical measurement of your golf ability, or potential ability.

It is used to enable golfers of different abilities to compete against one another.

A handicap that is 0 is considered scratch, so you will play to the par of the course.

A single-digit golf handicap is considered very good in our sport.

It is widely assumed that only 10% of all golfers around the world have a single-digit golf handicap.

So if that is you, big pat on the back!

An average golf handicap is considered anything around 18, whereby you are permitted one extra shot per the par of each hole.

So if the par was 72 for the course, you would be looking to shoot a score of 90 as that is 18-over par to match your handicap.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler highlighted the beauty of the current golf handicap system ahead of the 2024 Tour Championship in that he can still have a fair game with a 13-handicap player.

That's despite him having to play off a +7 handicap at his local track!

"It depends on the game, but at home I'm typically playing to a +7," two-time Masters champion Scheffler said this week.

"I used to be a +5. They moved me to a +7.

"So now we've got guys in the group that are getting like two strokes a hole.

"I typically still will win more often than not, I feel like, but it's just fun. It's just entertaining.

"If you're going out there with a 12, 13 handicap you don't know what the heck is going to happen. If we're playing Wolf there is a lot of volatility there and it's fun."

GolfMagic's Johnny Percival has been providing our Instagram followers with more details about England Golf's iGolf this season.

iGolf is an easy-to-use platform that enables you to track your performance, view your playing record and obtain a Handicap Index under the World Handicap System.

England Golf's iGolf is the only way to obtain a Handicap Index under the WHS, the same as a club member has.
