McIlroy taking cautious approach off tee at Shinnecock
Rory happy to play long irons into greens if it means avoiding the rough.
Rory McIlroy is taking a cautious approach at Shinnecock Hills this week in his bid to add a fifth major to the collection.
The Long Island layout infamously hosted the US Open in 2004 with no player breaking par on Sunday, and the average score coming in a 79. Judging by the social media posts, the rough will again play brutal this week, and the greens will be lightening.
"I think I'll adopt quite a conservative strategy off the tee," McIlroy said. "You're hitting into big targets. So even if you're leaving yourself back and maybe hitting a couple of extra clubs into these greens, it's not such a bad thing. I'd rather be doing that than hacking my way out of the rough."
Rory plays with Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth today.
