The company claims there's confusion among club golfers in what club to choose so they are launching 'long distance fairway utility clubs called FYbrids which aim to span and 'simpliFY' the range of equipment between driver and 6-iron. Take, for example the new FYbrid 19.5-degree model, which Wilson Staff says replaces three clubs - the 2-iron, the 2 hybrid and the 7-wood with its specialised head shape and loft/length combination offering ' the greatest shot flexibility of any club on the market and ideal for those increasingly long par-3s.' Said Harrington, who used Wilson Staff hybrids on three of the four extra holes it took to win the Open at Carnousite, when he tested the new FY club: “They gave me this club to test five minutes ago and there’s no way they’re getting it back! I really like it." Balancing the FY club in the family are two fairway metals and three iron-replacement hybrids that Wilson Staff says provide the golfer with the easiest possible approach to long distance fairway play. The 3-wood (15 degrees) and 5-wood (18) are suited to long par-5s and narrow par-4s, where distance off the tee is essential, while the lofts and lengths of the 3-hybrid (21), 4-hybrid (24) and 5-hybrid (27) have been designed to replace traditional 3-, 4- and 5-iron respectively. Adds Harrington: “Few things are more important than having confidence in your equipment and knowing that it’s going to deliver the required yardage. These FYbrids offer any golfer the options that simplifies the game from the driver down to the traditional 6-iron and the more you can remove doubt from your mind, the better you are going to play." | |
The clubs feature a railed sole plate, which push the ground impact point forward towards the face to minimise the club bouncing into the ball and reducing the risk of thinned shot. Toe and heel 'reliefs' also make the clubs more playable from hillside lies and allow the clubface to layed open or closed for more advanced shot-making.
