Bryson DeChambeau's plan to go all-out attack on Augusta National has backfired for him so far this week, but the American has at least managed to scramble his way past the halfway cut.

DeChambeau, the pre-tournament favourite and reigning US Open champion, followed up his opening 70 with a 72 on day two to finish on the exact cut mark at level par in tied 50th position.

The American was left to rue a lost ball on the short par-4 3rd hole when failing to ientify his ball in the rough just left of the green. That led to a trip back to the tee en route to a disastrous triple-bogey seven to send DeChambeau tumbling down the board.

Despite a mini fightback on Saturday morning with three birdies in the space of four holes when returning to finish his second round (after darkness suspended play on Friday evening), DeChambeau finished with consecutive bogeys at 17 and 18 after failing to get up-and-down from behind the green both times.

Jon Rahm, who was playing alongside DeChambeau, carded a superb 66 to move into a five-way tie for the lead on 9-under par alongside Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Abraham Ancer and Cameron Smith.

"I started hitting some great shots out there," said Rahm.

He added: "It's going to be a good weekend. If you're a golf fan, there's a lot of good players at the top. It should be a fun watch."

Patrick Cantlay, Hideki Matsuyama, CT Pan, Sungjae Im and 2018 winner Patrick Reed are one stroke off the pace on 8-under par.

Tiger Woods also returned to finish his second round on Saturday morning and remains well in contention to successfully defend his Green Jacket on 5-under par.

Rory McIlroy fought back superbly in the second round after a dismal opening 75, and the Northern Irishman will begin his third round on 3-under par as he goes in search of completing the career Grand Slam.
