VIEW DEAL

TaylorMade's wildly popular P-series irons have been revamped for 2024, and with the new addition of the P7CBs, the P770s have also been treated to a fresh facelift.

The P-series caters to an extensive range of players, from Tour members all the way down to your average Joe. The P770s sit firmly in the middle of that pack, offering Tour aesthetics with the benefit of increased forgiveness, making them ideal for low to mid handicappers who desire refined aesthetics with enough punch to save the odd errant shot.

Featuring flighted CG, a forged hollow body construction and a precision milled clubface, the new P770s are said to deliver a touch more forgiveness than their predecessors, while still maintaining the sleek aesthetics that make them such a popular choice for the better player.

To see if TaylorMade had been able to improve an already very impressive product and be considered one of the best irons of 2024, we took the P770s out for a few rounds with our Foresight GC3 launch monitor to see how they performed.

Let's get into it.

Player Level

The P770s are an ideal fit for golfers who play off anything from scratch up to ten. Boasting Tour aesthetics with slightly more forgiveness than a pure blade, these irons are versatile and could work incredibly well in a combo set with P790s or P7CBs to perfectly fit almost anyone's game and skill set.

TaylorMade P770 Looks and Feel

TaylorMade have been arguably the best in the business when it comes to aesthetics for quite some time now, and they can add the new P770s to the long list of incredibly impressive offerings from recent years.

We don't want to sound dramatic, but in the players/players distance category these irons are without a doubt the undisputed best looking irons on the market.

When we first laid eyes on them, we were blown away by the silky profile and razor sharp lines. The feeling of pulling them out of our bag was reminiscent to when you see a samurai sword unsheathed for the first time.

The blade-like design features a single panel that runs through the heart of the head, featuring P770 detailing that adds rather than takes away from the overall finish.

Down at address, the topline is actually quite generous for a players iron, and it certainly instills confidence, especially in the longer irons.

The toe is quite pronounced compared to the likes of the Callaway Ti Fusion, but it's a look we've become used to from TaylorMade irons, and one we're quite fond of.

The blade length is certainly compact, but there is still enough meat behind the ball to prevent it from being intimidating.

In terms of feel, these irons once again really impressed us during testing. The forged construction provides a deep and powerful sensation at impact, and there is still plenty of feedback from across the face to keep better players intrigued.

The P770s still utilise a hollow body construction, and having tested a number of different hollow body irons over the year, they can sometimes feel, you've guessed it, very hollow, however the engineers at TaylorMade have done a fantastic job of making the P770s feel softer and much more like a solid one piece forged iron.

All in all, the P770s get a big thumbs up from us in terms of both feel and aesthetics. But how did they perform?

TaylorMade P770 Irons Performance and Forgiveness

P770 irons have been impressive performers since they burst onto the scene in 2017, and although the design, and construction has changed dramatically since then, we still had very high hopes for how the newest generation would hold up under the microscope.

After hitting only a handful of shots with our GC3 launch monitor our suspicions were confirmed. These irons are strong, stable, forgiving and deliver plenty of punch.

As you can see from the table above, our Equipment Editor Alex Lodge was able to achieve optimal numbers with a 7-iron in hand, and that stayed consistent throughout the set.

Thanks to TaylorMade's FLTD CG, which moves the centre of gravity throughout the set, Alex found he was able to launch his long irons high with plenty of spin, and keep his scoring clubs slightly lower, with a more penetrating ball flight to attack pins.

As a result of the P770s hollow body construction they also pack a serious punch, giving the longer irons in the set that giddyup that you would typically expect from something a little chunkier like the P790s.

In order to ascertain whether or not a higher handicap player could also use the P770s effectively, I also hit them and experienced very similar results. I typically use P790s for the forgiveness they offer, but I found that the P770s delivered exceptional speed and spin consistency from across the face.

P770s aren't necessarily designed to be ultra forgiving clubs, but they certainly possess enough of it for your average 10 handicap golfer who doesn't necessarily always find the centre of the club face.

Another area where the P770s have seen a noticeable improvement is in turf interaction. We found when using them, they were able to glide through the turf, providing healthy divots, without feeling like the sole ever got stuck in the ground or bounced up too aggressively.

If you've got this far in the review you can probably tell we are big fans of these clubs. The P770 range has gone through quite a dramatic evolution over the years, and the newest generation certainly feels like the product of a decade of fine tuning.

The looks are magnificent, the feel is much improved and the overall performance is five star. Well done TaylorMade!

Should you buy a set of TaylorMade P770 Irons?

The short answer to this question is yes. The TaylorMade P770s are some of the best players irons on the market and they're ideal for aspirational players who possess a handicap from anywhere between scratch and ten.

Thanks to their stunning new design, improved feel and turf iteration and best in class performance, they're a stand out favourite for the best irons of the year in 2024.

Another benefit offered by the P770s is how easily they can be blended with P7CBs for better players and P790s for those who want a little added forgiveness.

As always we would highly recommend getting fitted for a set of P770s if you are going to purchase them and we would also definitely push you in the direction of a combo set, so you can really fine tune your iron setup.
